Default 2018 Ford Mustang - Acceleration Test by Motor

Here you go guys Motor mag has finally got their hands on a 2018 manual and auto Mustang GT.

They took both cars to the Heathcote Dragway and had a few attempts at matching ford's claimed 0 to 100 figures.

Ford's Claimed 0 to 100 figures for the 2018 mustang are 4.3 sec for the auto and 4.6 for the manual.

After several attempts these were Motor's best figures:

2018 Mustang GT auto: 0 to 100 in 4.53sec, 0-400m in 12.49sec

2018 Mustang GT manual: 0 to 100 in 5.21sec, 0-400m in 13.2sec

“Typically, when you shift gears, you give up time,” said Widmann. “In Drag Strip mode, the engine torque doesn’t drop when you’re shifting. You get peak engine torque and horsepower straight through thanks to our new Ford-built 10-speed transmission.”

The car’s 5.0-liter V8 now features dual-fuel, high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection technology for increased power and efficiency. The engine’s 460 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque represent improvements over the current model’s 435 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. The result is an engine that delivers robust low-end torque, high-rpm power and improved fuel efficiency.

Drivers of EcoBoost®-equipped Mustang also will feel increased power on the strip. The retuned EcoBoost four-cylinder generates 310 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque – a 30 lb.-ft. gain over the current model. Drag Strip mode – one of five driver-selectable modes available for 2018 – has been designed to provide maximum acceleration and performance for straight-line driving. Drag Strip mode is primarily controlled by the transmission and delivers a significant acceleration boost, eliminating the lost time usually associated with automatic shifting.

The new 10-speed transmission, with a wide-ratio span and optimized gear spacing, helps deliver higher average power for acceleration – resulting in improved responsiveness and performance. The 10-speed architecture features Ford-patented power-flow and Ford-patented direct-acting hydraulic controls. It’s designed for optimum ratio progression and efficiency, and provides more accurate, quicker upshift and downshift capability.

In addition, an all-new electronic control system features real-time adaptive shift-scheduling algorithms engineered to help ensure the right gear is engaged at the right time, including skip-shift and direct downshift capability.

Compared to the outgoing six-speed, the new 10-speed automatic has quicker shift times and better low-speed tip-in response. It’s uniquely tuned for all five drive modes – normal, sport, track, Drag Strip and snow/wet. Steering wheel-mounted shift paddles allow drivers maximum manual control.

Unprepared track and standard tire pressure and
I also didn’t hear the words sports pack mentioned
so that means 3.15:1 gears for the auto not 3.5:1

The manual now has a close ratio TR6060 box and 3.5:1
rear axle gears but the first three gears are now much
taller than the2017 car’s wide ratio MT82-D5 gearbox.

Iv seen youtube clips of these and the guys in the states are running very high 11s. Are theirs the same spec as ours?

Good question, the 2015 - 2017 GT RHD V8 model had different shape/design exhaust headers due to the steering column, the result of that was this caused the RHD model have a fraction less horse power quoted than the LHD model. Is this still the case with the MY18 model?

I've never been able to run as fast or quick at Heathcote as I do at Calder. Same car, same driver and one time the same weekend!

I find it harder to launch at Heathcote on street tyres, and the altitude is higher than Calder!

But I always read articles about actual track times....

Right. Track, weather and altitude are make or break conditions that someone who has not raced in a touring season, in particular, have difficulty relating too. It is not uncommon for publications skew results.

Well the 2018 has about 30-40 rwkw more than the outgoing mustang, as herrods dynoed a 2018 manual at 314 rwkw, so regardless if it loses a few kws to the American one, it’s a big step up on the 2017.

Not likely there'll be one parked in my yard any time soon but it still irritates me a little bit that countries outside the U.S. don't really get the chance to buy a fully loaded Mustang . Maybe one day they'll do that .

Any idea what the HSV Camaro will be set up like ?

First ones are due by mid to late July last time I noticed ..Despite only 1000 or so being built in the first run , and the big price tag I'm betting they'll soon draw back some buyers considering Mustangs . Maybe then Ford will up the anty a bit more with some Premium or Performance packages a bit more .

That'd be cool ...

I've noticed the people most bothered by the safety rating are those who'd never buy one anyway, even with 5 stars.

As mentioned, No Falcon ever made would score above 2 stars with todays testing guidelines. The ratings system is flawed in my opinion.

It's also funny how the practical and economical ZB Commodore with its 5 star safety rating is outsold by an impractical V8 coupe with a 'poor' safety score.

But comparing apples with apples, what other coupes score 5 star i wonder? I imagine very few, if any.

I tend to agree.
As I've mentioned before... No Mustang in over 50 years has ever had a safety rating of more than 3 stars by today's rating system, but that did not stop it becoming the best selling sports car of all time.

Does anyone here who worries about safety ratings ride a motorbike? - 0 Stars

Does anyone here smoke? - 0 Stars

Smoking, Motorbikes and Mustangs are for risk takers.

If you have a family and young kids, then, by all means, buy a Camry or other 5 star rated car.

Horses for courses as they say.

I guess the question needs to be asked, is an FGX Falcon or VF Commodore with a handful of airbags, ABS DSC and the few other features they have really stack up against modern safety technology?
In 2018 is it really worthy of 5 stars and if it is, does it mean a vehicle with lane departure, autonomous braking etc. etc. get 6 or 7 stars and at which point do we stop just adding stars to keep up in order to differentiate and realise that whilst the Falcon and Commodore of that era were safe cars for their time, they are fast becoming obsolete in that regard and by todays standards of safety tech, really only 2 or 3 star cars.
Is a niche full sized passenger vehicle designed to a budget by 2008 really a 5 star car in 2018?

Is 3 stars the modern version of 5 stars and what does a genuine 5 star car feature in 2018?

The Falcon/Commodore would have been 3 star cars at some stage and improved, if the Mustang is currently a 3 star vehicle under modern standards wouldn't it simply suggests there is room for improvement.

Sales look like flattening(down 80.9%) But could be anticipation of new updated model.Think the initial “excitement” has now passed.Even Ford concedes that it remains to be seen whether it can keep that kind of momentum up.It will probably settle down quite a bit on the sales arena.Cheers

It just shows that Mustang buyers value the car in spite
Of what non buyers may think. You can order a Mustang
so many different ways that change the character of it.
Guess that’s why Ford sell so many more than Camaro.

The front end is very nice, but I don't like what they have done to the back end with the tail lights... Bending them in like boomerangs.

We actually hired one. Mehhh..

They may run low 12s at 100% throttle but its all gearbox keeping the revs right up.. day to day driving it feels nothing like a low 12 second car.

I actually waved down a race between a mustang 2018 vs a dodge challenger. The mustang got away from it.
At least here in Australia we get the Premium pack as standard, including leather interior and Sat Nav, and even my 19 inch Ecoboost stock wheels are the expensive performance model wheels in the US, so we do get a lot for our money.
