Default What was the first band you saw live!

Hello,
A little bit of a take on my " first LP " thread!
I saw a lot of bands live,a hell of a lot,Aussie,NZ,Yank and pommie bands all or most in Sydney.

First Oz band was Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, at Granville Town Hall from memory in 1970.

First international band was Led Zeppelin in 73-74 at the SCG,later on Deep Purple and Slade, forget where and of course the great Thin Lizzie on the steps of the Opera House that was when Stevie Wright performed Evie, parts 1,2 and 3.
Too cool.....

Cheers Billy.

Midnight Oil, Lakeside Oval, South Melbourne, Oct 28 1984 and sooooo many other bands since then.

When music was music, and the musicians could actually play and sing without sampling/mixing etc.

First band I saw live was Van Halen 1991 in the States. When I heard they would be the opening act at the MTV Awards, I knew this would be my only and last opportunity to see them live with that lineup.

Hello,
I arrived in Sydney in Dec 1968,I was 15 yrs old,I come from the home of the Beatles, so when you saw Thorpie I was 5 years old,and that must of been as "raw" as rock n roll gets, what a great buzz that must of been,by the way what were you driving or riding?..or too young then?

And did you ever get to see Johnny O'Keefe live, if you did I would like you to post what it was like, for both Thorpie and O'Keefe?
That's about as cool as rock and roll gets, you made my day, or even my week.

Kind Regards Billy.

Hello,
Yes good band The Flowers, but ya got to admit "Icehouse" sounds better, I saw them at the Capitol in Sydney 1981, I remember the year cos I just got back from the NT, it was a cool night ( from what I remember ) ended up at the Cross and had breakfast at "Sweethearts", lol, that's not a joke.
Iva Davies had a flat in Sydney which was apparently freezing cold in winter, hence the song Icehouse.
There was a Scottish/British band called The Flowers hence the change, that was as they were getting more airplay overseas.

Regards Billy.

Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs at the Isle of Wight Hotel in Cowes one NYE, I must have been 15 or 16. I got thrown out after a fair while for drinking in there under-age

I remember seeing Skyhooks at the San Remo Hotel, not sure what year but they were trying to get everyone there to buy their first album - someone can work approx what year

JOK was down the Gold Coast sometime in the late 60's.

Thorpie wasn't a rocker in 1958 - he would have been 12 I think. He played a concert up at the local Catholic church hall.
I've seen him live a few times right up until just before his death.
As good as all the gigs were, the best one for me was when he played at Timmy St. Ledger's birthday party about 1963!
My ride then would have been my uncle's hand-me-down fixie.

Hello,
Cool, I loved Thorpie as soon as I heard him at a mates house when I first moved here, on a record not live in his house lol..

Skyhooks formed in 1973 and put "Living in the Seventies" out in 1974, I bought it too, still got it.

Regards Billy.

Same here! Saw Alice at the Sydney Showgrounds , Welcome to my Nighmare. It was supposedly the loudest open air concert ever at the Showgrounds . Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner were amazing! Good night, good times

https://youtu.be/D0CAsy5YrCI

I know it’s a completely different scene but went and saw Simple Minds last time they were here, they still go really good! It was at the old Hordern Pavillion in Sydney.

Hello,
What a strange coincidence, I love the "Oil's" what a band, I first saw them in a pub somewhere in the Sutherland Shire in the mid 80's, and back in the 70's in Sydney 2SM and JJ used to put amazing free concerts on in parks around Sydney on a Sunday, I saw AC/DC live at Victoria Park near the Sydney Uni, and no Bon Scott then, it was Mark Evans upfront.

Cheers Billy.

Hello,
Lots of folk can't cut it as an apprentice, and I know because I had 3!
Thought I wanted to be a motor mechanic, got fed up doing services, oil change and filters, you imagine that, I walked away from an indenture in 1969 just as the XY was being delivered, all models.

Its a sad fact but folk get talked into or take a trade that they don't like just to please their father? " get a trade son " and that's what happened to JOK probably.

How many tradies have you met who were just crap, just there because dad said " get a trade son "
You know I'm glad I left my mechanics apprenticeship, but its all I wanted to do as long as I could remember, but it wasn't to be.

Cheers Billy.

Saw the Oils in the Domain last November, still great! A real mixed crowd too which was good to see.

For all you Adelaide boys, have you ever been to Billy Bobs open mike nite at the Grace Emily? Man that’s a good nite out, they had some top talent on as the nite progressed, or maybe it was beer induced hahah.I think it was every Tuesday nite, been a long time, but a real fun pub.

This must be the tour after the 81 tour.
Iron Maiden didn't tour here til late 82, and by that time Bruce had replaced Dianno.
