Default Victoria - Operation Mayday - Unroadworthy vehicles

Just a heads up

Operation Mayday - Unroadworthy vehicles

Police will swarm the west of the state today for a mass traffic blitz targeting un-roadworthy vehicles in the lead up to winter.

Operation Mayday will see police perform vehicle checks at more than 45 sites in major towns and cities across Western Victoria.

The operation involves general duties police and members from Highway Patrol Units in Geelong, Torquay, Colac, Warrnambool, Portland, Hamilton, Moorabool, Ballarat, Horsham, Stawell, Northern Grampians, Greater Bendigo, Campaspe, Macedon Ranges, Central Goldfields, Mildura, Robinvale and Swan Hill.

Western Region Road Policing Inspector Michael Baker said police would not only focus on major freeways and highways as part of the operation, but also local roads and back streets.

“Over recent years we have seen an increase in collisions during May and June and a contributing factor to this trauma has been the condition of vehicles,” Insp Baker said.

“As the cooler weather now approaches and the roads become wet and icy, the safety of all vehicles on the roads becomes critical.

“It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure their vehicle has roadworthy tyres, all seatbelts are fully functioning and steering and brakes are serviced.”

Insp Baker said it was vital that all road users understood tyres were one of the most important parts of a vehicle.

“Tyres are your only contact point with the road and those in poor condition increase your stopping distance and reduce a driver’s ability to react to road hazards,” he said.

Operation Mayday will take place on Wednesday 22 May.

Victoria has a new 10-year Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan. For more information visit www.roadsafety.vic.gov.au.

Would love to see the cops nab this clown at works rust bucket, expired queensland rego, bald tyres and never mind leaking coolant and engine oil, every afternoon he has to top up his leaky brakes!

About time they focussed their efforts on the real unroadworthy cars, instead of modified cars........

I welcome these kind of operations when targeting unsafe vehicles (not safe modified vehicles), I mod my cars, some mods may be questionable but its all done properly, safe etc, but as car enthusiast we get hassled. I see so many cars, modern cars, expensive cars (merc BMW) running around with BALD tyres its not funny. Then there are the guys at work who drive absolute dangerous rust buckets that have plate riveted over all the holes.

I'm getting paranoid now. My ride height and exhaust noise are ripe for picking.

My Falcon, I look like Grandpa going to bingo, then church, with a hole in his muffler thanks to my lifted ride height and factory 15" wheels lol.

My heat shield I had made up hides most of my extractors and you can't see whats going on inside the engine, lol.

Macedon Ranges...you need to watch out Damo.

Some time ago I went for a drive on a nice Sunday afternoon in my little MGB, approaching Lancefield there was the local copper on the main road doing breathalyser checks. I said to him I was surprised to see him there. He said "You don't know when you'll get stopped for a check."

Same thing with this Damo, especially with that local cop.

Missing from the end was ...... "Government has budgeted $1.8 million from the exercise and looking forward to the extra revenue"

Yes, they should get the cars and drivers that are dangerous off the roads, why do it just 1 day of the year? Do it as a matter of course ..... but unfortunately I am sure a few slightly loud exhausts will be sent packing because of the danger they cause to society. Do it properly and consistently. Target the $1,500 crappers. Blitz's are only used as a perception of finding a fix and is extremely short term.

No one is bagging the police ..... the decisions behind them, yes, are being questioned. No problem questioning decisions made by those that rule? Be sad society if we couldn't but suppose a few would be excited about that.
