Default Tips for getting a manual off the line

Can anyone recommend any ways to get the best launch in a manual car ?

I have a heavy duty clutch fitted so should I be more daring with the revs or just take off easier and rely on the fact its a manual to make the most of each gears ???

with my manual, i make sure i do a burnout and get my rear tyres sticky.
With the 3.45lsd and sticky tyres i launch at around 4000rpm and its a quick clutch slip. I dont mind a little bit of wheelspin.
With the 3.08 open centre i was takin off around 2500rpm. haha
An auto will shift quicker then the manual so make sure u get the most out of the start. You have alot more rpm to play with then an auto with no stall.

I tried many different methods on the day you were at WSID.

3500rpm clutch slips worked best, but I had very limited traction, and anything moe than around a 1600rpm clutch dump would have whels spin.

Don't forget to flat change.

I can’t claim to have extensive drag racing experience but I think I’ve got as much out of my ute as it’s got. My technique is similar to Rick’s, I used ~3000 and slip the clutch a bit, then take it to ~5500rpm in first and perhaps a bit less in 2nd. The hard bit though is knowing how hard to let the clutch out, you want to be pretty aggressive with it but if you go too far you get wheelspin and can say goodbye to a decent 60 foot time.

I found the change into second needed to be a bit soft (relatively ie not just bang the clutch out) as otherwise there was significant wheelspin, however that was at the first Heathcote day I attended in May and the night air was a bit dewy so perhaps I might have to rethink, there could be a hundredth or two there!

The key is going on a night when you can have lots of runs to practice. Do a few runs close together and you can really feel the difference from one run to the next.

Flat change? PM me if you guys need your T5 rebuilt!!!!!!!!

I drove my 347 AU to many 13.6's, never went faster with a flat change.

Yeah the last effort at 3000rpm on the stock clutch killed it.

Still, I have a better clutch this time.

So should I just ring the neck out of each gear or is there another way I should be looking at using the gears.

Redline each gear, and flat change.
It gives the best chance of being at a higher RPM for the next gear.

Too late had mine rebuilt last week after 8000ks,I agree flat changin dont do shit,so im gettin the s/shifter sorted out for quicker changes.

Guys i have the old parts out of the box at home,let me tell ya if you flat change it,its gonna shit the tin.They are not very strong after all when you look at the bits that i broke.

Flat changing is keeping the throttle wide open during gear change.

It is the quickest way to get down the 400m, though certainly isn't the most friendly to the drive train.

All serious racers will do it.

I dont really flat change, but 1st to 2nd is pretty close to it, a dab of clutch and only a slight lift off the throttle. 2nd to 3rd i change normally, just faster. Need a short shift kit to get it through pretty quick, the standard shifter in the T-3650 boxes are crap at high revs changing 2nd-3rd

Depends on the way you do it...i would do it fast but not rough, if that makes sense. Dont really drop the clutch after gears. Have you got a short shift in the stang? Will make your 1/4 quicker, and makes everyday driving better too!

flat changing is a great way to bust things... not to mention that I don't like the idea of keeping my foot into it with no load on the motor.
Flat changing won't make up as much as a decent launch and a decent launch is kinder on the car.

Should be ok, your Tremec is similar to a top loader, and they are plenty strong.

I agree i did it in 2 of my 9 runs at heathcote last time, so I just cruised over the line in 5th at 100kph.

I do and I do !! 2 -3 at high revs with any sort of speed means a 75% chance of it Jamming up.

How do you get your ute off the line Chris?

Im eager to here how most of the BA Ute guys get off the line, i reckon i got the shifts sorted(short shifter) but any other tips on getting it off the line would be apreciated.

get tyres that grip. i did better times in a auto than a toploader with a brass clutch

i have not yet missed a 2-3 shift down the qtr. i can also change those cogs pretty quick, i have been asked if my car is an auto by the speed of the shifts from videos that i have.

i only ever flat shift 3-4. the first night i flat shifted i ran my best 14.7. I dont believe the 3-4 change was all of the gain from 14.8... i also have a short shift kit fitted as well...

yeah i only flatshift 3-4... i was thinking about making a gate like they have on the ferraris so i have no chance of missing 3rd.. haha...
