So i just put a new motorolla transister onto my speed controller to find that the fan still blows when the car is off.
only difference is now its flat out and i cant slow it down when the car is going. when you look at the inside of it, there are the two metal ribbons soldered onto the legs of the motorolla transistor and a third one, that looks like a ground / earth. should this earth to the body of the unit?? or go onto the screw that goes through the transistor, which would insulate it? also, are these controllers available new or reco anywhere? thanks |

looks like ive done it correctly, nothing shorting out.
tried another one from another car.... same bloody thing, fan going flat out when car is on or off. could it be something else?? |

No chance you have the base and emitter terminals mixed; it easy to as the solder connections are actually easier when you mistakenly cross them over.

Also check the fan/blower motor plug hasn't shorted. Follow the 2 wire cable from the fan speed controller to the fan and unplug the connection and check integrity of the plug and socket and inspect the inside of the plug and socket.

I assume you used a new mica or silicon rubber thermal washer and bolt insulation kit and heat sink/thermal grease (under the thermal washer) with the new transistor

i used the existing plastic insulator. about to get a multimeter and test to see if thats shorting. got some new ones, so ill try them. thanks for all the help

found the issue!!!
the smaller black transistor thing inside with the 3 legs, was missing a tiny little pad from under it which insulates it from the main body! so easy to miss this. its about half a cm square and as thin as paper. happy now!! |
