Whilst Mazda have a golden reputation for quality and customer service, this report shows that even the best can get it wrong.

Ive had 2 mazdas, an 03 6 and an 09 cx9 luxo pack, so yeah well before that date range, but, the 6 was booring but a solid car, the cx9 was really nice, but booring to drive and a pig on fuel. Cant really fault either, appart from being booring, the 6 just did what it did, no issues. The cx9 towed reasonably well, i always prefered the fairmont even though it didnt like my driveway even without the boat on the back. But the cx9 was a nice thing. Maybe mazda has dropped the ball and gone a bit hard on mass production, cost cutting and less quality control. I personally cant complain about the 2000s ones ive had. They may have been a bit booring to drive, but they were nothing but an oil change here or there and reliable.

From a commerical perspective, most manufacturers are going to take a similar approach in an effort to minimise their warranty costs. Apart from the 4 mentioned in the article, I'd be fairly sure that any others under investigation will yield similar results and don't for a moment believe that the prestige makes are any better - indeed one of the worst for warranty performance in this country has a three pointed star symbol.

There have been a few tales prior to the Mazda recall and the ACCC investigation about Mazda diesel engines failing within and just outside warranty on the whirlpool forum. Makes you wonder if these days manufacturers are pushing too hard for economy at the expense of reliability. I'm sure the Ford powershift fiasco was part of this misguided push for economy over reliability all to save a few small dollars at the pump and get some immediate bragging rights.

I think a lot of the issues are propelled by tough European emissions regs.

Manufacturing isn’t practically keeping pace with the tightening structures and drivelines are rushed into the market without adequate time for proving. Then it’s a dance between consumers and manufacturers as to who carries the can. This has been a problem since the early 2000s.

we have 2 - a 2011 3 and a 2017 CX5.
Had two warranty cases on each - both for the 3 were done by Mazda without me asking - they just did it as part of the service.
For the CX5 i had a couple of niggles, they confirmed it was warranty and did them.
I guess if i have a major issue it might be a different story.
