Ford stops sales of Ranger, Everest, Endura and Transit

Fuel injection parts concern for 2.0-litre diesel engines could affect 10s of thousands of vehicles
Ford Australia has taken the unusual step of ordering dealers to cease sale or delivery of imported models powered by a 2.0-litre diesel four-cylinder engine.

The order takes effect immediately and applies to variants of Ford Ranger, Everest, Endura, Transit and Transit Custom models, some of which have already reached dealers.

Late last month, Ford issued a dealer bulletin advising that high-pressure fuel injectors for the MY19.75 Ford Transit and Transit Custom commercial vehicles were defective and could result in a misfire and "reduced engine performance".

Ford informed its dealers of this issue prior to the vehicles arriving in the country. The vehicles affected were built in the company's Kocaeli (Turkey) plant between May 18 and July 12 of this year. Ford instructed the dealers to abide by immediate 'Stop Sale' and 'Stop Delivery' orders.

Since then, Ford has issued another bulletin, placing a 'quality hold' on select Ranger, Everest, Transit Custom and Endura vehicles in the company's Vehicle Holding Centres. Ford undertook in the second bulletin, dated September 30, to investigate these vehicles for the same fuel injector problem. This 'quality hold' applies to:

• Ranger models built between April 23 and July 10 this year,
• Everest models built between April 27 and July 20 this year,
• Transit Custom models built between March 16 and July 10 this year,
• Transit models built between March 20 and May 23 this year,
• Endura models built between February 25 and August 6 this year.

Finally, a third dealer bulletin issued on October 7 ordered an 'immediate' suspension of demonstration or delivery of the vehicles mentioned in the second bulletin. Ford has narrowed down the production dates for the Ranger to those vehicles built between May 2 and July 10, but the range of Everest production dates has been expanded to April 27 through to September 17 of this year.

Ford Australia has been approached for official comment by carsales.

Ah Diesel engines... can’t wait to they hit the motoring evolutionary scrapheap for passenger vehicles like coal and kerosene engines before them

Will have to watch the monthly Vfacts sales figures in the near future as its claimed the 2.0l makes up the majority of Ranger sales.

Very unfortunate but sounds like they caught the problem before delivery, the problem now is getting the replacement injectors in a timely fashion and paying dealers to change them before delivery.

I wonder if they soften and take the chance by changing them at first service

They haven't caught the problem before delivery. Jump on some of the Ranger groups on Facebook. There have been quite a few injector failures on there. On vehicles with under 1000km.

Maybe , just maybe, fingers crossed Ford has learnt it's lesson over the focus debacle and is actually being proactive for once!

True. You only have to look at the shear number of diesel powered passenger cars around 8-10 years old at wrecking yards these days. Almost all with blown engines or other diesel related issues.

Diesel Mazda3's and Holden Cruze??... give me a f**kin' break!
Why anyone would buy a small car with a diesel engine, is beyond me??

Because I was on P plates and had vehicle restrictions, so I got a car I could turn the boost up on and fly under the radar

It won't give you an indication of how many 2.0s are sold. It only affects certain build dates so there will still be sales of unaffected 2.0s. Of those affected, who is to say that dealers won't still sell/register them but just delay handover until the fix is completed?

Describe “quite a few” in the context of around three thousand sales a month. If Ford’s injector supplier is having quality issues, it may have taken quite a while for ford to get to this point of stop sale. So over a couple of years, there’s gonna be more than just a few duds in roughly 70k of sales

You gotta love the premium cost of Diesel engines these days, maybe open the door for less fussy petrol engines or maybe a hybrid for those who rarely if ever tow.

75k/kms in 3.5 years with my Captiva 2.2 diesel. No problems. I do live in the country. Not much stop start driving. Maybe, city driving is the problem. ?

They were one of the best selling SUVs for over a decade, meaning there are many 1,000s on the road, somebody has to service them.

I'm in the automotive game & you can say the same about any top selling car in any given era.

ATM moment the volume of Commodores & Falcons is diminishing, but we are doing real well out of Corollas, Mazdas, i30s & Subarus. Diesel utes & SUVs are growing, but they are too expensive to repair, many owners trade up to something newer.

Once upon a time it was VLs, XFs & Magnas.

Sadly in most cases they are only available from the OEM, meaning Bosch, Delphi, Denso etc. What they have in common is that they are all way too expensive.

We see many small Diesel repairs over go over $6,000 to $8,000 & that's only for the fuel system. As a matter of fact Captivas are one of the cheaper in this area.

They are absolutely terrible cars - I had one in my workshop just out of warranty fry its instrument cluster and a lot of them in for alternators, they are the biggest turds on our roads.

I wouldn't ever buy anything out of GM Korea, they've done damage to the Holden brand.

I certainly wouldn't accept having my new car registered and then sitting idle whilst I cant use it for however long it takes.

Im not saying it will give an exact figure, but if they cant even demo them never mind sell/deliver them and the 2.0l makes up the majority as we've been told, it should show up in the numbers.

it made sense when diesel was half the price of petrol. nowadays, not so much.

Been driving with diesel for years - no problems and great fuel economy. I get ppl not liking diesel but plenty do and aren’t whinging about them. Horses for courses. I’m actually surprised how many diesels are still around in some way. Who would have thought utes would become a thing 5-10 years back?

Interesting too the scrap yard comment. Unless EV battery prices come down, what do you think you will do with your EV if/when the battery dies out of warranty and get told a replacement is worth more then the car? I will take the known quantity tech than hopes and dreams it will sort itself out price wise any day.

I’m here if you

I do about 700-1000km a week a little 2.5l Diesel is perfect, the equivalent petrol thing would send me broke and Plug in electric vehicles don’t have the actual range to suit my needs

I love little Diesel’s and my house ute (the one I run around my block in) is an old Triton with 800,000 it’s never even had the head off, I did do injector nozzles on the bench about 300,000 ago and they could probably be done again now but other than that it’s strong as an ox

Its not as susceptible to price rises as unleaded - we're still paying into the $1.90 mark in Melbourne for 98 where as diesel is still around $1.45/L.

I do about 700-1000km a week, the diesel Focus does 5.5L/100km and I flog the absolute crap out of it at every opportunity.

Though these days with cars like the Fiesta ST my old man has with the Mountune package, it makes 59KW more power than my Focus, identical level of torque and sips 6.3L/100km even with me flogging the crap out of it.

These weren't available when I bought my diesel Focus new - it was a choice between 2L naturally aspirated petrol engine or a 2L turbo diesel engine - who the hell would go the 2L naturally aspirated engine, absolute nugget.

In 2019 - no way would I buy another diesel car with turbo petrol engines on offer left right and centre, unless it was an SUV but I'm vehemently anti SUV as I don't have kids.

Surface coating on the inside of the injectors becomes unstuck, blocking the injectors

I remember years ago asking how much a reconditioned injector pump on my old HJ-60 Cruiser would be... $2500 took me by surprise.

What do most people do when confronted with the repair bill? Assuming the car isnt running.

I doubt it will make a massive difference to the monthly figures given that it is only a relatively small build period affected and assuming a timely fix for those involved.

They just go off to wreckers, it depends on cars value, if its on a 200 series Land Cruiser people will generally spend the $1000 per injector they're worth because the car still commands mid to high 5 figures.

If its something like my Focus, I'm not spending $4000 on injectors on a car worth $500 lol

Dont know what you guys are on, last three cars have been diesel and its worked for us. First one was in CBD brisbane and there is no way a petrol engine car would get the same L/100.

Same out CQ, diesel would out number petrol cars heavily. Prices are within cooee of each other and we get better mileage.

As for fords decision, better sooner than later.
