The VW is a little on the fat side for a fast hatchback, hopefully the Fiesta ST remains lighter than that. At the same money, with better looks and lighter I think the ST would do fine

It's also going to have to be quite a bit cheaper than the Veloster Turbo imho, because that is a beast

Fabia RS!

$27,990 plus on roads. Real world you can get for not much more than that $27,990, if not lower.

147KW?

My lord, in a 1100kg car, if that?

It has to be under, well under $30K to compete with the dsg only GTI. Considering the ST is manual only it will want to be at least a grand cheaper... Which will make it great value, and also make Fiesta Metals very hard to sell with 98kW for $27K....

Looks like it's confirmed. Though this is for the US version. Not sure if they will change anything about the drivetrain for the Aussie version.

Ford just released details of the small performance car at a Los Angeles Auto Show event for the U.S. debut of the coming refreshed 2014 Fiesta that Ford has already shown in Europe, China and South America.

The Fiesta ST is aimed at competing against a raft of small performance competitors, including Mini Cooper S, Fiat Abarth, Chevy Sonic RS and others.

Really the Metal is a Zetec with all the options ticked plus 10kw which you can get from a $400 Bluefin tune.

I wouldn't go comparing it with the ST.

There will be barely 2 grand between them driveaway: both are Fiestas: one has 98kW the other 147kW - easily comparable on price alone (let alone both being a Fiesta!) - one is a bargain, the other way overpriced...

It is an interesting marketing question whether to offer a 3-door.

The purpose of the ST must be to take a swipe at BMW's Mini.

Does a 5-door ST have enough of the right image in order to attract the Mini Cooper S buyer?

Or would a 3-door be more authentic as a sports model?

It is interesting that Alfa has kept its rear door handles hidden as a tribute to the image.

Why not offer both 3 & 5 door? Surely at $28-29k these things will sell like hotcakes.

The number of mums I see driving Polo & Golf GTIs on the school run is amazing. AT $30-40k these cars are way more fun to drive than the typical Sante Fe/Territory/Pajero/X5 that lots of families use for the school run.

They cant sell 3 door normal models let alone an ST.. Look at the XR4... Great car and they couldnt sell those either.... It needs to come in a 5 door as well.

You won't sell 3-door normal models. Different market.

The problem with the XR4 was its old, only-an-engineer-could-love-it look.

Sure but look at the Metal at the moment. I hopped on car sales and there were over 70 for sale on there.

Its an awesome little car... but its 3 door as well. Im just saying imo the market wants a 5 door version as well.

No idea to be honest, could be emissions but come on the Focus has the same output from its EB 4 so why not the Fiesta?
Maybe the same people that dealt with bringing the RS here are organising it

No detune, the US just measure it when it's on overboost. So we all get the same engine, which should be good for 0-100 in just under 7 seconds.

I'm pumped to see this model in Australia, haven't had offical word from Ford Aus yet though on if and when. Coming out of a Polo GTI I'd love to finally get into a light turbo'ed Ford. The only reason I didn't buy one over the VW was because all Ford had was the Zetec. I hope there is a manual and not only automatic like the current Polo GTI.

Can't come soon enough!

I'm gonna take a guess and say $28-29,990 drive away in 3dr if we get a 3 door. It cannot be any higher.

A word of caution: in the US, for the third time, 83 000 ecoboosts with the 1.6 turbo have been recalled: the reason - the car may catch fire. There's a thread on this issue in the Pub section... very worrying stuff indeed. 200hp is great, but not if there's a chance your car (with your family inside) is a good chance of frying. The 2L EB is not affected.

It looks like we will only be getting the three-door model, which will suit some people, and not others.

Ford skips Fiesta ST five-door

Power of three: No five-door Ford Fiesta ST will make it to Australia, since the German-built models destined for Down Under do not come with such a configuration.

By MIKE COSTELLO
FORD has announced that its much-anticipated German-built Fiesta ST hot hatch will be available in Australia only as a three-door when it hits local showrooms around the third quarter of 2013.

The company had been weighing up whether it could offer the Mexican-made US-market five-door version – revealed in Los Angeles last month – considering the vast majority of light vehicle sales here are five-door models.

As reported, the 132kW/240Nm 1.6-litre turbo pocket rocket will give the Blue Oval a potent one-two hot hatch punch alongside the larger Focus ST.

Following this week’s confirmation of bodystyles, the Fiesta ST will line up against a range of rivals with an extra set of doors.

Chief among these is the forthcoming new 149kW/240Nm Renault Sport Clio 200 Turbo – due a few months after the Fiesta towards the end of 2013 – plus the existing 132kW/250Nm Skoda Fabia RS and the cheaper and lighter 100kW/160Nm Suzuki Swift Sport.

When the Fiesta launches, only Volkswagen with its 132kW/250Nm Polo GTI (also sold with five doors) and Peugeot with its forthcoming 147kW/275Nm 208 GTI (due around July 2013) will offer comparable three-door rivals.

Ford Australia brand communications manager Neil McDonald told GoAuto the decision was down to the car’s European origins – the Mexican-built version is not available with three doors and the German model (built in Cologne, not Saarlouis like the Focus ST) does not come with five.

According to Mr McDonald, the decision follows the trend laid down by the Fiesta XR4 (badged ST overseas) of 2007 and the recently revealed Fiesta Metal ‘warm’ hatch, both of which were also three-door only, “so we think there’s a continuity here for the sports enthusiast market”.

The production ST will be powered by a turbocharged 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine producing 132kW of power at 5750rpm and 240Nm of torque between 1500 and 5000rpm, matched exclusively to a six-speed manual gearbox.

This is said to be enough for a 0-100km/h sprint time of less than seven seconds and a top speed of around 220km/h.

Despite gains of 22kW and 50Nm over the XR4, Ford also promises a 20 per cent reduction in carbon emissions to below 140g/km and a fuel consumption figure of about 5.8L/100km.

Ford claims ride and handling improvements over the normal Fiesta courtesy of its RS performance division. The ST sits 15mm lower than the standard model and also gets an enhanced torque-control system.

Ford’s electronic Torque Vector Control system, which sends different braking pressure to the inside front wheel, debuted on the bigger Focus ST and is similar to systems such as Volkswagen’s XDL.

Ford engineers have also tuned the car’s electro-mechanical power steering system and redesigned the steering arm, giving the ST claimed sharper responses and better levels of feedback, as revealed through more than 5000km of testing on the Nurburgring Nordschliefe circuit in Germany.

The diminutive ST’s sporting credentials are signposted by Recaro sports seats and muscular body enhancements, including a rear spoiler, a black mesh rear diffuser, and honeycomb front grille and five-spoke graphite-coloured alloy wheels.
