Billion 7300's seem okay for a cheaper modem but i would definitely stay away from the 5000 series billions.

Most modems seem to run OK on 1500k.. it's only when your getting up above 5mbit where some really fall over.
Definetly lots to keep in mind there. I never knew Billion had a cheaper offspring. I may upgrade my modem at some stage, but to be honest, it doesn't do too bad on the latest firmware. Have 6 computers leeching off it in this house.

why do you feel that is poor? It's an awesome connection. Don't tell that to my mother, she's in the country and pretty much stuck on dial-up, unless she wants to pay over $100 a month for wireless and next to no download allowance.

not for a long long time, we had all sorts of trouble getting adsl1, it was borderline, we're 5 and a half kms from the exchange, only reason we were able to get it as we were testing something for telstra and they offered us adsl, they said we shouldn't have it and tried all sorts of excuses to stop TPG from supplying us.

so is your adsl1 the 8000 version or 1500 only? Wonder if you could get slightly better speeds if they gave you full speed adsl1

1.5 Megabytes / second or 1.5 Megabits? If 1.5 Megabytes, whats wrong with that? If not, than that does suck a bit.

I'm pretty far from the exchange on Telstra wholsale being resold by Optus. I sync at 1536 but limited to 512kbps.

Great sites:

TPG's ADSL2+ speed vs distance map:

Click on your exchange.

5Mbps or 5MBps ? 5Mbps is pretty average these days (or even under average) and I doubt you get 5MBps on a residential connection.

p.s. I assume those downloaded movies are paid for, right? ...

One day the public will rise up and topple the great oppressor that is Telstra, and on this day, we shall see fair and decent broadband for all!!!

I just hope I'm alive to see it ...

It's pretty erratic with speeds but it's hella windy on the river today... :(

And it was slower to Brisbane too, that's why I have Sydney.

That's not really bad considering we used to pay alot more. adsl2+ is nice. I was happy when I got it. Be easily over 2.5 years now.
