Firstly i got purchased the media player off ebay there a re 2 types

- one takes a 3.5 " hdd ide , the downside to this is they are quite big and woudl have to be mounted under the seat and a infra red extender would have to be used (250 g max)
- the smaller of the 2 take a 2.5 " laptop hdd and will fit comfortably in the tussue holder of the falcon (80g max)

after getting the media centre i had to power it , this was done useing 3 7805 regulators to supply 5 volts to the media centre , you could also use a 150 w inverter to plug in the std power supply , another way is to use a charger for a mobile ph that charges at 5 v - most do

i then orderd a ALS rgb convertor that came with the audio interface

once it was all fitted i added a wireless lan access point to give me wireless conectivity with the wireless router in the house so i can upload movies and music direct to the hdd in the media centre

im really happy with the finished job

That sounds great.

I currently run the same thing for my home system, but I love the wireless connectivity option, though some units do have wireless already built in I think

That looks sweet.

Is it also possible to run a TV Tuner, OBD software etc, or is it only a media player.

I've done a search for media centre and found heaps of similar items, but none give the technical specs.

The ASL converter box you're using does have 2 inputs doesn't it? That would help a bit I suppose.

Also, from my understanding it is auto sensing.

Hi Nice job, looks like great,

I have just seen this media center on Ebay but doesn't look like it has Network ? Did you do something with USB or has yours a net port.

there are both types available , however it is difficult to tell from most ebay summarys

the word u are looking 4 is NAS - Network Attached Storage

the remote on that one is the same as mine !! but i see no reference to network

the other pointer is lan port or rj45 connection
cheers and good luck len

You guys have me looking for this stuff now as well! I have made my own unit out the the carconverters RGB converter and have it configured now with an in-cabin rear seat camera with IR leds (So I can see the kids at night - has been great for letting me seeing if 18 m/o junior has gone to sleep on trips to/from babysitter at night) and reverse camera that is triggered by the reverse light.

I came across this unit too:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/USB-2-0-HDD-H...QQcmdZViewItem

It has NTSC and even does RGB component out - so theoretically you wouldn't even need the ASL conversion, you could hook it straight up to the NTSC RGB input in just above the tissue box.

I might even be able to put this into the ' RGB pass through' input on my converter which is supposed to allow for pass-through of the Sat-NAV connection.

Cool!

So, should it, or does it?

When I say 'Hook it straight up' I do of course mean that you'd need to do all the wiring to convert the 3 x RCA RGB output to the special RGB input in the ICC (I bought my connector from Supercheap Auto). But yes, the ICC spec is 'NTSC RGB' so that's all you need to feed it. There are other threads that discuss the pinouts and requirements.

Of course, I must admit, it would be much easier to use the ASL converter, but if you're a handy man, there are resources in this forum and on www.fordmods.com that will show you how to do it.

I'm curious about the Wireless discussion above though. I haven't found a media player with built in wireless. Is there any chance someone could point me in that direction?

Then again, with USB, it'd probably be just as easy to pull it out and take it inside than fiddle around with wireless and flaky signal strength and having to go outside and turn the ignition on and go back out and turn it off.

I was originally looking at one of these: http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=3#p1153 with an m1-atx power supply that keeps power on the PC for a timed interval after the car is shut off. But by the time you add all the PC bits it adds up to nearly $1k, which has a low WAF (Wife Approval Factor).

The media boxes listed here, (in combination with an ASL conversion of course, as this is an ASL discussion), in my mind is a much better proposition.

I have just purchased this over Ebay 120G HDD and player, I also have the convertor from a previous modification.
Just need the 5v input now, do you have a circuit diagram for the 5v convertor, or is it easier to use the phone charger lead, but I would prefer something more hidden and authentic looking.
Any help much appreciated
