The disinformation coming from both sides is incredible.

Putin has always been brutal, but a madman looking to start a nuclear war? I doubt it.

I notice there already talks of charging Russian officers with war crimes, where was that call when Biden ordered a drone strike on an Afghan aid worker and a car load of kids?

Peace talks in progress, started 8pm AEST. It's interesting that Belarus, a staunch ally of Russia, was able to broker the talk. The importance of keeping comms line open can't be understated. Shame to see everyone else seem being intent on feeding more ammo for a brutal drawn out war. Not sure how more weapons are going help 18 year olds who have never fired a gun before.

I was there too, sometime in 1990, but the plane was an AN-124. AFAIK, it was being used to cart bits and pieces to Antarctica and was stationed at Melbourne airport for quite some time. I know this because I could see it from my lounge room window.
I also had a Russian friend whose parents worked at the airport, and were well tied in with the Russian community and church, and through that he claimed he flew to Antarctica onboard the 124, which I heard later on crashed there.

P.S. Did you get a free Twix bar?

I believe the AN225 was built to ferry the Russian copy of the American shuttle, with two being built, one being retired to be used as spares for the other.

Dan Murphy's, BWS to remove Russian-made products from shelves after invasion of Ukraine

Like I'm going to drink Australian vodka. To the batmobile!

Quote:
Products made in Russia will be pulled off shelves at major liquor retailers Dan Murphy's and BWS after calls for boycotts from the Australian Ukrainian community.

Parent company Endeavour Group made the decision to remove drinks originating in Russia from across its retail, hotel and online businesses in response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine and lobbying from members of the Ukrainian community.

Endeavour Group owns numerous drinks and hospitality businesses including alcohol delivery service Jimmy Brings, Cellarmasters and ALH Hotels.

Dan Murphy's and BWS are two of Australia's largest liquor retailers, with more than 1,500 stores around the country.

Whoopsie!

Claims have circulated online that images and clips from the destruction of a residential building in Chuhuiv, in eastern Ukraine, on Thursday are instead from a 2018 gas explosion in the Russian city of Magnitogorsk. Some also claimed that an image showing a bloodied woman at the scene was from 2018 or that she was a "crisis actor" - someone hired to act out scenes from an attack.

These claims - made by a variety of pro-Russia and conspiracy-themed accounts - are false.

Well...according to reports, first set of conditions has been set by both sides, with further talks to be had.

Russians want:
1. Demilitarization and "denazification" of Ukraine
2. Recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimean peninsula

Ukraine wants:
Become a member of the EU asap

Also reported is that Russian state backed media has been banned in the EU because they refused to use the word "invasion" whilst covering the events. You'd think at some stage, youtube videos, maybe even some of the ones previously posted on this thread, might start getting censored and scrubbed. A bit like Covid coverage when you think about it.

Anyone else noticed that India (and UAE) abstained from the UN vote? Interesting dynamics. I think India gets a lot of their arms from Russia.

The Mryia was a huge point of national pride for the Ukrainian people (it's in the name, afterall), and it was the official Ukraine Government media who has officially reported the destruction of it it, conveying the same sentiment.

No need to overreact.

This unprovoked attack on Ukraine could be the start of something much bigger and we need to talk about it - making a mockery of stuff not related is just childish, making a mockery of the invasion is just childish - this is the stuff history is made of and we need to discuss it

It appears they have a very strong military trade cooperation with Russia. As a member of the QUAD, it is a very interesting scenario for the reason you pointed out.

International Olympic Committee places politics above athletes' rights to compete as it reacts to Russia-Ukraine war

Quote:
The Olympic Truce — a United Nations resolution supported by an overwhelming number of nations ahead of each Olympic and Paralympic Games — has been broken by Russia three times in the last 14 years, with its invasion of Georgia during the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, Crimea during the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics and now Ukraine ahead of the Beijing Paralympic Games, which being on Friday.

The IOC raised this point overnight in announcing its recommendation that sport not only bans teams and clubs from Russia, but also cancels the ability for individuals from Russia and Belarus to play or officiate.

I thought you’d left. Interesting how you didn’t bother acknowledging the two posts offering suggestions as to why the An-225 is a relevant topic to this thread.

In other news, seems the World Taekwondo organisation has stripped Putin of his black belt. This might seem trivial, but martial arts is something Putin apparently takes very seriously, so it would actually be quite a blow to his personal pride I reckon.
