A friend who also has a Mondeo was driving and his car went into limp mode and wouldn't put any power down. When he restarted it worked fine but he was suspecting it was the gearbox and took it to his local Ford dealer. They had a brief look without pulling it all apart and have said he needs a new gearbox and it isn't worth doing considering the value of the car. He has driven it 190,000 which isn't that much in my opinion and I was wondering if anyone had advice on either a second opinion or the cost of sourcing a reconditioned gearbox?

See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_w11KzYL54U&t=104s They might be just trying to sell him a new car as that isn't a lot of KMs. See the other MK 5 videos on Alan's channel too https://www.youtube.com/@alan4x/sear...k%205%20Diesel It would also be worth getting hold of Forscan for Windows https://forscan.org/home.html running it on a PC with one of the recommended dongles https://forscan.org/download.html (https://www.obdlink.com/products/obd...x/?ref=forscan or https://www.amazon.com/dp/B094Z7PBLS and checking for fault codes; the car might be able to tell you what is really wrong with it.

There's a guy in Melbourne who reconditioned these gearboxes for $2500 exchange. He'll also remove and install at a very fair price.
He advertises on Gumtree, just search "DCT450" and you'll find him, name's Adam. I certainly wouldn't take the word of a Ford dealer though. IMO most of them don't have the first clue about these cars. The advice on getting Forscan and and adapter is good. There's quite a few things that seem to be completely unrelated to the transmission that can trigger limited function and limp mode. Some are relatively minor, compared to a replacement transmission. |
