Hi everyone

Have a few questions about the hospitality industry

1. Why is it that it seems that the industry is understaffed and people seem to leave all at once and actually take better offers that they get.

A. A lot of them have probably done it for years and the coronavirus has gave them a chance to re assess their work life balance.

B. Answer A applies but the industry got busier than ever since march 2020 and people just can’t do it anymore.

C. People are getting tired and finally had the time to make change they were thinking about for a while and being understaffed doesn’t help as they have to work more.

D. Bit of everything

2. Will the hospitality industry ever be the same as it was before and have enough staff to cope and go back to not being so busy they can never keep up, or is this likely it.

3 if you’re wanting to do something else in time because you’re tired and work every weekend and every holiday and now which to only work normal work weeks and had enough and waiting for time to be right would you be better off following the persons advice at local mens shed and start planning now even though you don’t have to do anything yet.

4. What are usual clues that it’s time for a change and what do people do to try hang on a bit longer and why don’t people last 30 years anymore.

Guess overall people in the industry are getting or are tired and work every weekend and every holidays and work endless hours and it’s hard work and no longer wish to and the lockdowns and job keeper and the stimulus package and quarantine gave them the chance to make the change they were thinking about for a while or the industry has changed and staff have left and ones there are working more and harder and it’s gave some the push.

And usually with something else you would probably get same money or more as in hospitality in less time by doing something else

Think it’s also border closures causing people to holiday home and you see that or people out and about when you’re working and would love to do same

1) Many of these staff are from OS on work or study visas. That's all dried up now hence not many staff available.

2) Once borders open and things return to some normality then I expect the hospitality industry to bounce back very fast. Lots of people un or under employed at the moment.

3) Absolutely. If you want do try something different start today. I saw an add on the TV that there is some sort of government initiative for free or low cost retaining to get into other industries. Something worth looking into.

4) Hate getting up to go to work? Only in it for the money? Worried about getting the flick because you show 0 care factor to what you do? Dream of doing something else? Those are the best clues. People hold onto something they don't like doing mostly to satisfy their financial commitments and for fear they can't find something they like soon enough that pays the same.

How come people don’t last as long as their grandparents did thinking it’s because things are meant to be throw away now and you’re supposed to change every 10 years

1) Part of the job. Some people that work in hospitality deal with people every day and must know how to handle most situations thrown at them.

Others work behind the scenes and hardly deal with people but must work to a timer or other criteria.

People leave for many reasons. Money, a break, family, retirement etc.

2) There is no longer a set rule as to how long you work in a job. 10 years? No, not these days. We live in a disposable society where you would leave a job if you could for an extra $10 a day much the same as your job will get rid of you if they could save $10 a day.

also is there a way to find friends similar age to you if you work every weekend and every holiday as thats when younger people usually are out doing stuff and is there a way around it while you're in that position or is this likely to be same for as long as youre doing it for.

is there a way to improve work life balance while working weekends and every holidays and/or in food service which usually requires that while you are trying to do right thing and try hang on a bit longer until the time is right.

think yous could be right that we live in a throwaway time now where you don't try fix things before finally replacing which probably why people throwaway jobs like they do with ict equipment as soon as they start wearing out which makes people look bad when they're tired and are just trying to hang on as long as they can

I think a lot of people got used to not working during Covid and getting government money.
Many just decided not to go back, or because job security was to unpredictable, closed, open, closed, open, partially open, masks, no masks, closed again.

If you’re wanting to eventually get out of hospitality as much as you currently like the people do you lot think it’d be a good idea to follow that person’s advice at local mens shed and start planning now even if you don’t do anything now.

Wondered as will be calling it in 5 years and it’ll probably take about that to get things sorted and up and running

What would be reason hospitality workers aren’t returning or are leaving all at once. Thinking being on job keeper made them realise how hard it is and probably did it 20 years and had chance to do what they wanted to do for a while and thinking also burnout as well and same money in less time
