Default Census 2016

Just wondering what your thoughts are on filling out the sensus , started filling out mine tonight then realized its not supposed to be done till next week.

I have to say i`m not really fond of it , while i have zero to hide , its not like big brother doesnt already know what you earn , how much you make , your taxes , what car you own , and a big portion of the rest of the details in your life .
anyone thats crooked probably wont fill it in anyway .

Whether you have a cynical outlook or not, the information garnered does assist greatly with future infrastructure, education facilities, shopping centres and more.
It assists the government of the day with their planning, administration and and other legitimate activities.

Believe it or not, when the data garnered is released, the website almost crashes from the number of financiers, developers, business people and corporations attempting to access it to see which direction they should be heading, which projects should go ahead and where the major growth centres are.

While not perfect, it is the best current method for all these things in use.

After arguing the point for a few weeks, I have been forced to comply with supplying information for a Household Monthly Population Survey.
While the ABS website suggests it relies on "willing participants", it turns out if you are unwilling you will be fined $180 per day for every day you refuse. A very effect way of making someone "willing".
And I have to do this every month for 8 months.

So yeah bring on the Census, why not, you are forced to hand over any info they want from you regardless, according to some act from 1905.

I have no problems with the Cenus, Governments, ATD, Banking institutions & Utilities already know all your personal info, FFS they probably know more about me than what I know about myself.

Yes i saw that it is optional as long as you pay $ 180 per day in lui of .

I mentioned it to my young brother and hes not happy , he goes "its the first year they are keeping your name and address , if its only for general statistics why do they need that " ?
i think he probably has a point , surely a post code or even a street and suburb would be enough if it was only for statistics .

The dept. carries on about the accuracy of their statistics, yet hound me for numbers about other family members working hours saying an estimate is fine. When I tell them, for instance, my daughter may have worked anywhere between 1 and 4 days last week, they just want me to say a number. Its pretty clear the "accuracy" is not there. Add to that I am one of only 20-odd thousand random households in the country being asked the question. Had they asked my neighbour everything would be completely different.
My answers are what is used to generate the unemployment rate number you see on the news. They literally encourage me to guess the answer to over half the questions I am asked.

Perhaps you could tell him it's not the first year they are keeping your name and address...

They've been doing it for over 100 years.

The census is not a new thing...Great Britain started taking a regular, standardised census in 1841...before that there was the Domesday Book and various other forms of census.

The answer is to know what you want , quite specifically, generally, and countrywide , . .before you begin filling it out if you want to get something out of it of value.
we know that community consultation is considered a success if they get .2% response to any particular issue, so imagine how the Census can be manipulated by a variety of focus groups with some care taken on how they enter details on the night.
I haven't seen the form as yet as I have been sent the code for computer fill out, but I'm told by some local government lobbyists that a certain group are asking people to fill out certain sections a certain way for a reason.
Lets face it, if it is compulsory by force of hefty fines, may as well make it work for you if you can.

Unless you are a hermit, living under a rock in the middle of no where, you would be surprised how much of your personal info is already accessible.
Fill in the census accurately and it gives the pollies no excuses when necessary infra structure is deferred or brushed over.

See you have missed the whole idea behind holding this data collection. If you are of a certain religion and there is more than one of you, then they may plan to allocate some space for your mob to build a place where you can worship your particular god. Same with your porno, if there is enough of you in that area where you own up to live, they may push you up on the list for NBN so yo all can enjoy your pastime. Unless you do not put your locks on the line well they already know the colour and more than likely already sniffed them.
So really, do you need an excuse not to do this crap?

Heard yesterday that some "tough bloke" told a census lady where to go when she tried to deliver a form to him a couple of days ago. Started raving on about the constitution, the government and his rights. She didn't leave a form as she was understandibly intimidated.
The next day a male census officer called on him and his reaction was slightly different.
He opened the curtain when he heard the marked census vehicle pull up at his front door (rural property) then ducked down and hid! Wouldn't even come to the door...

Not really a problem. If you have done it online you have the ability to edit it if things are different on the night of the 9th.
If you have already posted it, well, what's done is done, but at least you have done it!

Insecure encryption raises eyebrows.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has been forced to answer questions about the security of its online Census website after it was revealed to be using an insecure and deprecated form of encryption to protect the sensitive personal details of the nation’s citizens.

Tests of the strength of encryption used on the main Census website, first highlighted by security consultant and software engineer Ben Dechrai, reveal the website supports the SHA-1 hashing algorithm long considered to be insecure.

SHA is a component of a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate that is used to prevent the modification of data.

All major web browser operators have said they will stop accepting SHA-1-based signatures by next January. Internet Explorer owner Microsoft recently said it would bring that date forward to September 2016 after research showed real-world ‘collision attacks’ could open the door to digital signature forgeries even before 2017.

The Australian Signals Directorate deprecated SHA-1 from its list of approved cryptographic algorithms in December 2011 after finding the risk of a successful attack on the platform was “higher than acceptable”. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has said SHA-1 should “not be trusted” past January 2014.

Despite this, the ABS is still supporting SHA-1 to ensure those using older versions of web browsers are able to fill out the online form on Census night.

“As the overwhelming majority of browsers and operating systems are SHA-2 compliant, most people completing the Census will be secured using SHA-2,” a spokesperson said.

“However there are some older browsers and operating systems that only support SHA-1. To enable users with these older systems to complete their Census online, the online Census also supports older SHA-1.”

But users will still face the risk of a man-in-the-middle downgrade attack, which uses available backwards compatibility to force a computer to a lower and more vulnerable version of encryption, Dechrai said.
