Default Is Drag Racing a "Real Motorsport"?

It was pointed out in this thread http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthr...929#post789929
by a member that appeared to be a bit hot headed regarding a previous comment, that drag racing is not a real sport.
I just wanted to get other members opinions, I understand that some people may not be totally interested in it, but do they still regard it as real.

Certainly is a sport IMO, as is all motorsport. Its a competition with a set of rules, and very clear measure of performance.

I dont understand why some people would think it is not a sport?

What would it be if it was not a sport? A hobby? An addiction? Actually, its probably all three at the same time...lol

lets see.. if drag racing is not a motor sport than any 100m sprint ever ran at the Olympics, Comm games, world championships, Euro champs, nat champs, state champs, regional, local, interschool, school, grade, class and little athletics better get called a non real sport.. its EXACTLY the same thing!

It has an unbiased start, a fixed length and a finish where a clear winner can be decieded based on who crosses the line first. If that isnt a classic "race" than what is?

of course drag racing is a motorsport.... it takes skill to launch a car with a perfect reaction time, and beating personal bests...

If it's not a real sport , there are a lot of people world wide with expensive hobby's. On the surface it looks like a bit of fun, beneath the surface the skill involved in getting a car down the 1/4 from driver , setup angles is very involved.

Although I voted "no" I still love it, and I guess it still is a motorsport.

Doesn't compare to circuit track racing though.

And I was just about to write the following when I read your post. _2:

"Drifting" is to motor-racing as synchronised swimming is to swimming...

"Drifting" is to motor-racing as figure-skating is to downhill skiiing...

Of course its a motorsport. In circuit or other racing if you make a mistake you can catch up. In Drag Racing if you make a mistake you go home and try again next time. As previous post says it may seem easy to those with lower powered cars but to me its the most competetive of all motorsports. Thats why I'm hooked for ife.

certainly is a form of motorsport although a winning result is more about the car than the driver compared to any other form of motorsport. I find it unforfilling competiting in drags compared to sprint racing.

Yes, drag racing is motoprsport.

Drifting is also motorsport.

Taken from www.dictionary.com

Sport is:
Quote:
∙ Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

∙ An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
Both fit this.

There is skill in the building of a drag car, and skill in the launch, and skill in the racing...... everytime you hit the track you aim to do the best you and your machine can do, just the same with every other sport..

Oh and by the way i can drift in my EL in the wet too, obviously what you do and classify as drifting

Those who say its not a motorsport haven't raced, or don't have the guts to get out and try it.....

But i would luv to hear what you call it if its not motorsport.....

"Macca 779" So doesn't the driver pick the tune and have to react to the lights, pick a dial-in, ensure they don't breakout and still get to the finish line first. Are you a one time competitor at a test and tune or have you tried bracket racing for real? (Probably the first option!)

Its a motorsport with a heavy reliance on machinery as opposed to driver skill.

The 3 biggest problems the sport has

-No handicaps
-regulations are very hard to enforce when you think about the complexity of a vehicle. (everything can be tweaked)
- no set budget/salary caps

Its just that Drift appeals to more your figure skating Crowd....
"That was a mad tyte pirouette y0!"

Drift isn't "Racing", it's scored subjectively.... so whoever huffs the most wang wins.

Obviously there's a little more to drag racing that purely flooring it. There's a degree of skill involved in getting the bastard to run the 1/4 mile in the first place.

Huffs the most wang? I thought I was pretty well versed in English but now I'm truly lost.

Drifting - "That's not how you make porridge!"

In drag racing, 1/100th of a second delay in reacting can mean the difference between winning and losing. That comes down to driver skill.. not to mention reading track conditions.
I love both drag and circuit... and I understand they have different demands on the drivers... and respect anyone that gives either forms a go.

Drag racing IS motorsport, it may not take the skill of a circuit car, but the MPH sorts out men from boys, it's the best way to test the power being made from a new mod, powerfigures don't mean much with out a run to prove it.
