Default Ford USA change of heart.

How I wish we had a government and or leader that had the balls to stand up to manufacturers like President elect Trump has to Ford USA.
They were planning to build complete new assembly plant in Mexico but after a tirade from Trump have decided to reinvest a billion $$$ in Detroit that will employ an extra 700 people.

But with leadership and potential leadership here in Australia we can only dream, drooll and stare in amazement at the potential he is bring to their country.

I am having a big fight on facebok with some americans over the potential that Trump can bring to their nation.

I got shut down when I classed them as negative, loosing, hypocrites who cant, dont or wont believe in their countries financial prosperity future.

Doesn't our prime minister have millions of his own money tied up in off shore bank accounts in the Hayman islands??? And he asks all of us to pay tax but he does everything to avoid it. Australia has no chance anymore. It's each for themselves mentality

Hmmm so before Ford was planning on building focus in mexico and build something else in the old focus plant (which would require money invested to tool up) and now Ford will build the Focus in Mexico and build something else in the old Focus plant. Hmmm ok.

I was reading on Facebook as well about Fords decision to invest $ in Detroit, I'm also quite amazed at the negative towards Trump becoming president.
I hope that trump & his team can bring jobs back to USA , it may give Australia hope for the future.

The plan all along was to move low margin focus to Mexico, and start building high margin ranger in the us. A smackdown by trump doesn't change that.

I have American friends with skills that have moved back to the USA.
they had been living here for lifestyle reasons.

silly the stuff you read by those that should know better. Always going to be a direction change with each next generation. Same rubbish you read about OZ. stuff I see reported about Victoria gives us the impression they have 2 heads.

those that ignore history are doomed.

That's what Ford want the public to believe. A change in government administration was more likely the motivating factor.

Successive governments in Australia has said there is nothing they could do to stop the demise of the car makers closing up here; Donald Trump has shown them up for the liars they are.

The reason no more production of Falcon and Commodore is that we are not buying them, or indeed other Ford products

Ford’s Australian sales have declined every year since 2004 when they hit 135,172, dropping to 79,703 in 2015.

Sales of Falcon dropped to less than 300 a month in 2016

Correct before anyone invests in selling a product, the public have to embrace and buy the product after all this is share holder and our tax payer money.

I am not sure why people don't understanding this, would they plough millions of dollars into something so you can loose money..

Unlike Australia, the US actively supported it's automotive sector (to a point) by introducing Buy America policy, encouraging every organisation from local council to federal government to buy US first.

The Australian government at all levels has been implicit in the demise of the local automotive sector by doing the exact opposite of what could have supported the local industry. Buying 100,000's of imported vehicles, manipulating CO2 ratings to exclude local cars from government contracts and the list goes on......

You cant sell enough in Aus to make it viable. Especially when you are selling a product that is almost dead. Comparing us to America is stupid its a completely different scale.

The US has 300 million citizens to spread the volume over, it won't work here no matter how hard you try.

If you want to live in a country that builds stuff then you have to buy stuff your country builds.

Yes but still, the top 3 selling vehicles in the US are American made. If the top 3 vehicles sold in Australia were Aus made they could have been in for a chance.

The fact is that they stopped selling what the people wanted. From the release of the Australian made Ford to the death of it the formula never changed, the bread and butter was always the 4 door sedan. No one wants 4 door sedans anymore.

I dont think it even had to be a new ford. Buying a near new ford helps resale values, which helps new car buyers decide to buy a ford.

Any car purchase that isn't an import is a plus imo.

Bear in mind, Trump hasn't actually don't anything yet.

I am also interested to see what he puts into motion once he is president but let's stop pretending that he has already revitalised the dwindling US economy. He hasn't.

So hilux sold 42k units in Australia last year from a thai base with capacity of 450k, corolla sold 40k units, combine those 2 into Altona, will still leave you with a marginal factory at best.
It wasn't long ago that commodore and falcon each sold 100k units without breaking a sweat, those days are long gone never to return.

I have to say i dont think much of this fella Mr Trump (personal opinion ) , but at least it appears he is trying to rebuild manufacturing and labor type jobs and get his country going .
Our pollies for decades have done everything with policy to favor imports , on one hand they give some handouts to the locals to appease the public ...... oh look, we are fully supporting manufacturing ....arent we good pollies ???? Wheres my skippy badge ???
Then they destroy manufacturing with ever increasing costs and trade imposts.
When was the last time we heard any Aussie pollie in the top job say with any conviction and follow up with any policy to make people buy Australian ? or .... actually say " buy Australian " ???
You cant compete with other companies if you cant put enough dollars in to make a competitive product .

The mere fact other countries can build a car to higher standard , put more stuff into it ......... ship it thousands of miles across the world , sell it and still make a decent profit ,
where as our local car makers ..... every single one of them is either running at a loss or just battling to break even should be a clue that our local companies are getting ........ and have been getting the shaft for years.
And it obvious this is having an effect on the country , see all the homeless dudes around the burbs and in the cities and increasing crime rate ???
This is a direct result of what happens when you kill off the labor market and manufacturing and go for some short term gain in trade .
