We had been waiting the best part of ten years, through many false starts it was finally off the ground. Back in the day when the Geelong Speed Trials was a regular occurrence, we as a Club had always put on a display and thought “One of these days we should get of our arses and enter the racing.” And in 2003 we did, only for it to be the last…
And so, earlier in the year with much fanfare it was announced that the Geelong Revival would be running at in December of this year. It didn’t take us long to get on board to find out when Entries would be opening. We ended up with six Club Members competing on the Saturday (Ross in his XY Fairmont GS, Wiggy in his XD Fairmont Ghia, Pa in the 65 Mustang, Adam in a 66 Mustang, Ken in his Daytona and myself in the XB GT) with Ken especially keen running on Sunday in his Jaguar D-Type Replica also.
We all arrived at the Pits early Saturday morning ready for scrutineering which was pretty straight forward, fitting Racing Numbers and taping over Battery Terminals followed by the Drivers briefing, we were all set to go.
Practice first up and we soon discovered how slippery the track was. Most of us were having bad wheel spin in first and second Gears, with Pa going close to setting a record for a Single Spinner Burnout.....
After a break watching the other Classes have their turn, we were back on the Track. Most peoples times improved over the course of the day as they got use to the surface and the curve. Ken was getting frustrated with his times and decided to give it one last squirt with the Traction Control turned off to see if he could get out of the hole faster. It worked a treat with his getting down to 12.3 seconds giving him the Class Win.
The atmosphere in the Pits was good with everyone friendly and up for a chat weather they were in a Mini, Monaro or Bugatti. By five thirty the racing was done and time head home for the day. Getting out wasn’t the night mare everyone was expecting with a nice orderly procession towards the City.
Early Sunday we met up at Rippleside for the trip in to the Show & Shine. Parking inside proved to be a little tedious with us being asked to move after everyone had setup. The end result was quite a few Burnouts trying to get up a Hill with very lush grass. We were joined by our friends from the Falcon GT Club of Australia who made their way down from Melbourne for the day.
Once we were settled in we had a look around. Cars were everywhere, all the way from Cunningham Pier to the end of Eastern Beach. A fantastic display with plenty of other activities to keep people interested.
Ken was at it again on the track with the Jag, pulling a best of 14.6 seconds.
Once again, at the end of the day it was an orderly process for everyone to get out and head home. In all a great weekend and I look forward to doing it all again next year.
Many thanks for Nicholas Heath and Scott Pigdon and their team for a fantastic weekend.
