If I was betting I'd put the 3.0L V6 diesel first because as much as we performance heads would love a V8 in a Ranger the majority "average buyer" group will still favour a diesel as it's economy will be obviously superior.

We've had a HiAce petrol V6 for 2 weeks while our Custom was in the panel shop and it couldn't crack 400L a tank. The thought of a 200kW van makes a delivery driver lick their lips until you tell them you have to pay for the fuel if you want me to buy one. It was needing over $150 per week and it wasn't being used as much as your typical courier driver work load whereas the diesel Transit Custom gets to 700-750km a tank without trying.

WRT Holdens numbers, I believe the "big discounting" was not applicable for February registered cars. Stay tuned for a very big Holden result in March.

Not if the two closest dealers to me are anything to go by. They either aren't passing on the full discount or the media reports were over inflated. Their yards are still full.

Gotta lol @ Ranger beating Hilux.
Toyota have 4 entrants in the top 10 4x4 sales for the month worth around 6300 sales and 5 in the top 20 for 6500 sales, almost double that of the Ford offerings on the same chart, so whilst the LC market is in decline I'd say diversity is the key and not having all your eggs in one basket is the safer bet.

The announcement was on the 17th. It would be fair to assume sales would've stopped on the 18th while people waited for the fire sale..

While it's true that Toyota takes the win in top 20 4x4 sales with 6,500,
Ford's 3,500 sales with just Ranger and Everest is still a good effort
considering that both are still short of optimal for our market and
the next best effort is Mitsubishi with two vehicles and 2,200 sales

August 2015 was the first time Ranger 4x4 outsold Hilux 4x4, a feat it then repeated in September that year and since January 2016 it has won 27 of the 50 months, including 10 of the last 12 with the total 4x4 margin being 2,358 in favour of Ranger over the last 12 months.

Hilux stays on top as a 'nameplate' because the 4x2 model outsold Ranger by 7,169 units over the last 12 months for an overall 4,811 lead.

It had been close between the 4x4 models for a long time with the winning margins being small either way but it's averaged better than 200 units a month in favour of Ranger this last year.

Astra and Commodore were stopped months ago-November? Holden has according to other forums no zb stock for retail sales for a couple of months and astra stocks are minimal.
But when they withdrew zb GMH said they would continue fleet sales in 2020. Guess that doesn't apply anymore.
I haven't seen a new Zb in the 3 Holden dealerships I am close to in 6 months.
GMH just gave up on zb as aussies would not buy it even though its actually bloody good.

Thanks R.
Always good seeing some figure breakdowns.
I'm really happy Ranger is doing well, we've seen it poking above Hilux since '15, and from memory topped the charts in NZ.
Just observations and train of thought.
Yep Toy has 2WD to boost their numbers, thats oppositon and they have been kings in range for as long as we know and that makes them far more viable as we see by model offerings, king of the white goods.
We can crow all we like re Ranger, for lets face its all the company has got in the ball game.
I see its not great in the big picture in business.
A$ is ugly now, Ford has become a "niche" product in todays market.
Those going on about good "margins" can't live off one model alone I expect - imo Everest and Endura really needs a good kick up you know what and get more market where there is heaps more to gain still.
Then at least Ford have 3 models fighting in the main ball game not just 1.

And the reason they would not buy it ?
Because GM have been playing games with Holden for 10 years, promising things that did not happen, setting a RRP on Commodore models that was higher than reasonable, taking customers as fools who will buy a Holden because it has a Holden badge, alienating past customers with their "Millennial" hipster focused advertising (I don't want to drive a car like my fathers car), crap servicing, lack of dealer's product knowledge …………….. etc, the list is endless.
Any one who has been inside a Holden dealers showroom within the past 3 years has been treated with indifference. Ask a question about mechanical specifications, be answered with a waffling monologue about cup holders and electronic nanny features.

Makes me wonder about a RWD low rider Ranger sports Ute
instead of chasing the tradie Ute bargain hunters.
Even the 2.3EB in the lighter 2WD would put on a good show.

It goes pretty well in the us ranger.

There is supposed to be a focus based ute coming from some media reports. Maybe fit the upcoming RS driveline under that as well

Agreed, I'm not saying Ford's results are bad, they could be better, but Toyota is facing it's own issues with Negative press over the DPF problems so they too could be better.
I'm simply pointing out that whilst the Ranger may be taking the shine off Hilux, Toyota buyers are still choosing the brand, just the more SUV style and with the light commercial segment in steep decline relying on it leaves you exposed.

While light commercial sales are down, I find it interesting that Ranger is resisting the slide,
Ranger's sales mix is clearly less influenced by forces affecting other brands, be that a
slide in fleet sales or internal conquest of Hilux sales but a bit too early to tell much.

While added diversity would help Ford, they may have to double down on Ranger and Everest
if those desperately needed SUVs are not anywhere near available for our market.

Ranger is by far the best product in its segment which will keep it at the top, but whilst it's still top, the trend is worrying and the total numbers for Ford the brand are down. Hilux may have lost its mantle but Rav4 has stepped up obviously due to product flowing through and Toyota's numbers are up in a declining market.
Will be interesting to watch the next 6 months.

Good to see Ford still in the top 10. What a sad end to Holden. Soon that brand won't even be in the list :(

While the brand existed there was always the **** all chance of a comeback story and now there is zero.

62% of February's RAV4 sales were hybrids, I think Toyota has the right strategy
Petrol hybrid for passenger vehicles are a great point of difference than boring diesel.

Toyota always knows how to flog cars even if they are still fridges.

If only Ford and Holden had one or two volume sellers like Toyota can flog them it might have been enough to still have Falcons and Commodores as a niche. We will never know.

Funny you mention Toys DPF probs.
I was talking to a client whose business is national in aftermarket parts and supplying mines is one of their regular go to business.
Newcastle mines have NO Rangers he quoted, gearbox issues galore won't touch them.
Their newcastle branch also has 2 rangers with over 200k's dieing to get rid of them both having had 3 box's changed to date.
I'm not sure what their other branchs intel is with mining accounts in qld/nt/wa but I'm going to find out in due course.
You know which dual cab he boasted about some mines have, apart from hilux, for reliability ? DMax, engines/boxs are great/reliable.
This new model icoming ss finally going to catch up with Ranger/Hilux with interiors etc......
Ranger sales must be more to Tradies/families, better coin for Ford in any case.
Just some goss

Totally contradicts the info i’d seen from one of the big miners, who saw no difference in reliability between the 2. Just that the hilux was a bit easier and cheaper to fix.

Well thats typical isn't it in the game.
I'm in Aftermarket myself, alot of my biz is with the many large 4x4 companies/specialists.
I know many would support what I heard.

I drive past a Budget dealer every day and they are part of at least a 3 site franchise. I asked them how do they choose their utes, basically it's as simple as the best price come replacement time wins. Last 2 years it was Hilux mostly and Navaras, the next set of replacements has been Tritons. Mining conditions are far harsher obviously however in same cases someone isn't going to tell you we bought brand X because it was simply the cheapest.

That doesn't really stack up... if it was best price then Chinese utes would be in, or at the very least Triton would always win over Hilux/Ranger/Navara.

In the retail market Triton is the cheaper model, however as this group gets a quote across it's whole fleet at roll-over time it really comes down to the incentives provided by the manufacturer month to month which can be a further discount on national fleet pricing, plus the preparedness of an individual dealer to make a deal. One thing I didn't ask was if the group does it's own servicing or goes to a dealer?

As to Chinese vehicles I still think there is a buyer reluctance otherwise why doesn't everybody buy one...time will either prove or disprove perceptions.

I don't think it's still well known just how much say VW/Audi builds and sells in China or GM or Ford etc...made in China is one thing, built in China with international QC standards is another...but I'm going way off topic...
