sat this week with family member almost crying as he has no job security after he has be payed $55 an hour for last 10 years and had to do a payed 6 year course in management.

that company went belly up with a Monday morning put your keys and phones in the bucket please.

I was latter told he has 2 year contract with a government backed organisation at $3K a week plus car-etc and In 2 years time he may have to go to melbourne -his wife just got a permanent government job at $55K or more and doesn't want to move to melbourne CBD.

Lost two developers today. Hopefully they can pick up some work elsewhere as IT seems to be tight here in Bris.

IT is tight everywhere ... offshoring is taking off again in a hell of a lot of places.
No job security in IT at all ... and bugger all new jobs out there ... and if there is ... there's hundreds of people going for the "one" job that becomes available.

So far I have survived the multiple rounds of redundancies ... but there's always more and they seem to come around more often.

As guess the old saying is true ... "Make Hay while the sun shines"

That there is exactly right. In my field of residential drafting, I have applied for more than 50 jobs that has resulted in 1 interview (no job). I kept wondering why there was no interview or job. Then I got an email from seek.com about 6 weeks ago outlining the Joblisting/application ratio. The email had this figure. 10-109. Next week was 8 for 88, 9 for 94, 10 for 102. You get the point.

That's a 10-1 ratio of applicants to to jobs available. No wondering I'm not finding work......

Effing ouch.

Yet the unemployment rate hasn't really changed. Doesn't add up going by this thread and the things I see and hear.

Well in the last week a mate out west and 3 other drivers had to take 2 floats up to Darwin with gear. The got to Camooweal and got the phone call that the company had gone belly up. Neighbour tells me one of his mates and 32 other blokes waiting to catch the morning bus out to the job site (as they do every morning) . Bus doesn't turn up. Makes a phone call, you guessed it, another one bites the dust. Hearing this sort of stuff on nearly a daily basis..................... My reps telling me it's getting really bad out there yet as you say the unemployment rate hasn't changed.................

I think what would help would be a different authority for this movement other than Kevin Andrews.

How can you be a role model for lifting when you're a greasy fat **** who criticizes people who make entire lifestyle changes in an effort to get better but haven't displayed a hundredth of the effort they have?

Technically "lifting" should be measured under kilojoules and not $$$, as the santa's at bloomingdales may actually lift far less than the santa's working at the local mall who only earn half the $$$ :S

And as a side note when i went for my interview at my current work i was 1 of 250 applicants i original got an interview because i actually address the guy who i was sending the resume to and adjusted it to match the job i was applying for at the interview they asked me direct questions relating to the company and since i had researched it a fair bit before going i was able to answer he said so many people show up with no idea bout the job then expect to get it because they want it? Due to my extra effort i was awarded the job. And i had no experience in the field either.

Hmmm ironic. If the government decided it wanted to crack down on drunk driving instead and fit alcohol interlocks into everybody's cars.. Then I doubt the 2 chronic alcoholics on this forum would be able to even hold a job or commute to work everyday.. and their perceptions would change very quickly.

I was in the auto industry for 20 years with a very secure job. No longer. Still underemployed two years after my redundancy package.

Bolded is quoted for truth. I went for a support position a bit more involved than what I do now (I figure I can pick up what they need quickly by being in the spot) with QPS and its now been about 8 weeks and have not heard anything other than your application has been received. I even spent 90 minutes rewriting my cover letter to suit. I got told by one of our other devs that sometimes those spots are put there cause they have to and usually promote someone internally.

Sometimes I think what industries need people all the time and would be hesistant to get rid of and I can only think of armed and emergency services.

over 50's
like me-I m certian that if you havnt been on the dole for 30 years you have some life skills AND I Know they are changing other schemes but I am scared working with the If I can get on the disability then I wont have to put up with this **** CLUB.

Councils--cost more to employ bludgers..and ?The money to employ them comes from the same source as the grants so its a no brainer that they should be doing some sort of real work. People go on about it as if the unemployment department is to keep people unemployed.

In this area the work for dole/training systems are a complete joke.

Several times I tried to get 20 year olds to work with me for the busy months to be told I cant because I will be bumped out of the que and have to start all over again. Or Im not able to do a course as I work too many or not enough hours.

I got upset this morning listening to the senator from TAS.

I had to leave rural home and family to get a low payed job And I could never get the cash bond together for the work visa to have the over payed holliday in Europe my sister had.

Do we need the get every one a job department to put on evacuation flights to supply labour to the community.

around here loads of people being layed off. lots of companies looking for short time workers.

casuals I spoke to today have construction jobs lined up for 2 years from now.

official forecast on radio national today was upbeat at 5% stable for 2 years...if you believe that...

A pretty specialised field though. Plus having the right attitude when you front up helps.
