Default Buy back an old AU

Our old XR6 VCT has been traded and is listed for sale at a local dealers. They want 412k for it - it's a 98 model with 157000km. I got $13k as a trade for it about 4 years ago, so I don't think it's worth $12k now - more like $9k.

It has full AU1 XR kit on it, plus TS50 rear wing - and 16s!!! I have a set of 17s I can put on it (from the explorer - they are very similar to the AU2 XR rims).

So...I'm thinking of buying it back - I know how I looked after it, and I know where it lived between then and now, and the owners always had it looking pristine.

What would you do? Buy it, or not?

If you can get it for a price you are happy with then go for it.

if you want to pay $12000 for an AU - its your choice.
"looking pristine" and "looking after" are 2 totally different things as well.

If you need another vehicle then at least you know it and hopefully it will be reliable.

Other than that, I guess it depends on why else you want it. It's an expensive trip down memory lane but if you have plans for it then at least it would be a known quantity.

Every now and then I have thoughts of buying a Humber Super Snipe (dad had them when we were kids) or a Morris Minor (my first car) but common sense prevails. I need a 40 year old car like I need a hole in the head, lol.

I do plan to buy an au xr8 at some stage but common sense always gets in the way of that, as well.

One day I'll just say "bugger it" and get serious about it ;)

Leave that one and buy the series 2 XR8 Adam's selling for $12,500.
I know I'm tempted to!

Bonus was, He only done a few thousand kms in it, rarely drove it.
Was almost the way i left it

If you think it will make you happy, I say go for it.
If not. Leave it.

Im happy i got mine back, but alas. I must sell it again now...

It would be a heck of a story to tell if you did!

I was tempted to do this myself, before I went the manual conversion and diff rebuild route. With the money I spent, and the money I would have got for mine, I could have bought that fine looking XR8.

I reckon go Falkeen's car JC and gas it! If you can get your old steed for 9-10K though you could also do that.

Either option would be good I reckon, but oh the V8! LOL!

Hope you and yours all well mate!

Even 9k seems a bit steepfor a 10 year old falcon. If you can buy an XR8 for the same price do it.

Mine's a early 99 mdl xr6 momo bits spoilers lowered rims etc etc I took it down to the dealers to see what I could get for it (trade in) was offered between 8500 and 10500.

So is 9k steep? IMO depends on the car what it has done to it, and could you get something better for around the same price?

If I found a need for it, I probably would.

Sure you could get an XR8 for that sort of money, but realistically you have the advantage of knowing the full history of the car since you parted with it. It is a known quantity.

you sold it once, you had your fun with it, sold it for a reason....do you really want to buy it back again to only have to sell it later down the track....again!!????you said your self its overpriced for a 10yo car. find your self another as suggested previously and work your magic on that. just my 2 cents.

I've bought more than one car back that I've owned in the past.

One I sold to trade up,and regretted buying it back, one I sold to buy the house, and it came on the market later when I could afford it,so I bought it back and loved it.

I would say it depends on why you sold it in the first place.

Thanks guys. I've taken all the advice on board and have found a few cars for better price with more features that I want (like LPG!!) And as luck would have it, the EL transmission decided today was enough. Luck must have really been on my side though, as it happened in our driveway.

I've been looking at a 2001 Futura I6 auto with 19" wheels, lowered and on dual fuel for $6500 (230,000km) - seriously considering it, but then today came across what I think will be a suitable replacement for the EL. It's a 1995 NF Fairlane Ghia V8 dual fuel with 220,000km on the clock. I check it out tomorrow, but at around 1/3 the price of our old AU XR6, I reckon it will be a goer. It also means I can swap the 2 or 3 good bits off the EL onto the NF (wheels, steering wheels, sound system), plus I get back into a V8, plus it's on gas, plus at a bit under $4k, it doesn't stretch the family budget too much. Once I fix the EL back up (I have an NC trannie ready to go in - ragtop & zhodak - you up for it??), I'll sell it for whatever I can get and get back most of the purchase price of the NF.

JC, if the EL's clean (which it looks to be), seeing as it's on gas, I'd try ebaying it. I sold my last EF on LPG for MUCH more than I was expecting, and I've seen lots of LPG EF/EL's go for the 5k mark.

NF V8 sounds nice, good luck with it! The 8's certainly are much nicer to drive.

If you get that much for the EL JC, you could put the surplus towards force-feeding the NF. One advantage of the Windsor is that the Yanks have many years experience doing emission-compliant forced induction and the technology is readily available. The Eaton M90 from around $800 new is arguably a bit small for the 5.0, it'd probably do 6psi, but that would still make a very nice responsive cruiser.

I bought the NF - she's a bit rough, but will get me to work and back. Ended up being $3500 with 2 weeks rego left, and needs a few things doing to it like installing a head unit (stereo, not supercharger), swapping over my HID lights etc.

I've already swapped over front brake pads, the SVO rims, installed a K&N 9" pod (need to make up another cover - the 6 cyl one doesn't fit over the MAF), fixed the drivers seat (loose mounting bolts) and cleaned the ISC.

And yes, I realise I am posting details of a non-AU in the AU section - I'll post this up in the E series area too, but this thread was me looking at buying my old XR6 (AU).

There is T1 TL50 on car sales for $15k which is way cheap. Its not perfect but should hold its value.

Good one JC, back on V8 power.

I'm sure it'll do very well with some more of your tinkering and TLC.

Just waiting for some pics.

Pics tomorrow - maybe.
I think I fixed the "funny" idle on gas, but now (not connected I'm sure), I have no tail lights or brake lights. Indicators work and reverse lights work, but the tail light circuit is not getting power at the loom in the boot - I installed the stereo today and ripped (literally) out some excess speaker wire, so may have pulled a bit hard and broken a wire or 2 somewhere, though it could just be an earth wire. Will try and track it down tomorrow - interestingly, I discovered this problem as I had no cruise control; just like an AU!

check fuses first....may be just that....fingers crossed for you. and congrats on the new baby. hopefully purring like a kitten soon (if not already) i bet there'll be an upgraded exhaust before long;)
i dont think much changed electrically between the EF/EL to the AU's either, so if you know your wiring for the AU's, it'll be fairly easy to hunt down problems in the NF
