http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2017/06/11/richard-hammond-survives-serious-crash

Quote:
A spokesman for The Grand Tour said he suffered no serious injury.
"Richard was conscious and talking, and climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames.
"He was flown by Air Ambulance to hospital in St Gallen to be checked over, revealing a fracture to his knee.
"Nobody else was in the car or involved in the accident, and we'd like to thank the paramedics on site for their swift response.
"The cause of the crash is unknown and is being investigated."
Clarkson tweeted: "It was the biggest crash I've ever seen and the most frightening but incredibly, and thankfully, Richard seems to be mostly OK."
A statement from the organisers of the Bergrennen, said: "On Saturday, an accident took place at the Bergrennen Hemberg in a demonstration run between the training courses.
"The vehicle left the track and landed in the meadow."

Not bad I'd say... Wonder if he would still be alive if he had the same accident in a new Mustang?

I guess when you consider how many different performance cars they test.....and the way they drive em'......somebody's bound to come unstuck sooner or later eh'....
Wasn't it Hammond who crashed the jet car some years back and took ages to recover?

I believe when Jules Bianchi had his accident, his injuries were described similar to those that Hammond received. Diffuse axonal injury I believe it was.

I'd say yes, judging by his track record he could be involved in a serious crash in a rocket powered billycart and come out relatively unscathed. Some people just have this unusual luck or uncanny gypsy magic following them around, while others die of relatively minor accidents that shouldnt even be fatal. His nickname should be called crash bandicoot.

What I don't understand is how did an electric car catch on fire that quick when there were no petrol fumes involved.

10 years ago I was in a bad accident on the freeway in my beloved ebv8 fairmont R.I.P
Anyway there was a motorbike rider that lost control and the van in front of me ran over the bike and instantly stopped like he hit a wall I was a fair way back and still managed to hit him at 80kph. There was petrol spilling from the bike and while we were waiting for emergency services the petrol of fumes caught on on fire either from the hot engine or exhaust and even then it didn't light that quick. So how does an electric car burst into flames that fast.

I was about to ask the exact same question. I guess the batteries would be pumping plenty of volts, I don't pretend to know how they work, but I'd have thought they'd have a shut off system or something to slow it down?

Electric-vehicle battery packs are made of hundreds to thousands of battery cells, each of which contains a flammable liquid electrolyte. Managing the risks of lithium-ion battery fires comes down to two things: keeping the electrolyte from catching fire, and keeping a fire from spreading if it does happen.
However, lithium-ion battery cells themselves can sometimes generate enough heat to ignite the electrolyte in a process known as thermal runaway. Short-circuits between the two electrodes in a battery cell, for example, can heat up the electrodes. If these electrodes get too hot, the heat can trigger chemical reactions that quickly generate more heat until the electrolytes burst into flame. This seems to be what happened in reported Tesla fires, when damage to the battery packs caused short-circuits leading to thermal runaway.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rimac_Concept_One

Quote:
The motors are powered by a 90 kWh Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (LiNiMnCoO₂ chemistry),[2] giving the car a range of 500 km (310 mi) per charge.[8] The car's body is made of carbon fiber.[11] The interior features custom leatherwork and hand-made dashboard components.[11][20]
That is quite a combustive battery chemistry.

There is a thread going on over diyelectriccar.com:

Rimac C1 specs sheet:

Battery pack

  • Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (LiNiMnCoO2) chemistry
  • Voltage: 650V nominal
  • Capacity: 90 kWh
  • Cooling: Liquid
  • Milled aluminum and sheet aluminum housing
  • Rimac Automobili Battery and Thermal Management Systems
  • Several layers of redundant safety and protection systems
0-100km/h 2.5 seconds...
1224hp

...
I'm genuinely speechless.

Was watching a Top Gear repeat last night and they were racing through St Petersburg Russia on various modes of transport, and Hammond was on Chris Froomes racing bike worth 9 thousand pounds, and he got caught in a tram line and went guts up.
He hurt himself and was a bit shocked, a truck nearly squished him, so he's a bit of a clutz it seems.

All the safety assist features in the world won't save you when you actually have an accident and that is why the Mustang scored so low due to the lack of those features.

I hate to say this... But honestly, he should probably NOT do the show anymore. He's nearly died 3+ times now.

Most people 'love' Hammond. Don't want him dead. No TV show is worth a life. Up to him I guess - but I rekon there should be a limit on how many accidents can be done, before fired - idk, for at least 3 months.

Anyone else, and they get a fine, ban or whatever?
