Fuel Price difference 91-95 octane

I was filling up at a Shell in Melbourne the other day and was shocked to find 95 is now 17c a litre dearer than 91.

Is this the same everywhere or just Shell (Coles Express) ripping us off?

It's about the same up here as well. Sometimes a lot more.

Filled up at BP a couple of weeks back and E10 was $1.13 ... and 98 was $1.60

That sounds high for 95.
I filled up yesterday at my local servo with V Power 98 at $1.46 ... Which was only 18 cents more than 91 ?

I think it must really vary between station operators in some areas.

its a trend thats been slowly creeping in same in nz , can be up to 24c difference between 91 to 95 approx 10 years ago the difference was only 8c ???

A few years ago I pulled into a servo in the Greensborough area and the 98 was cheaper than the 91.

It depends on the servo. Where I usually pour (BP down the road), 95RON is 8cpl more than 91RON, with 98RON 6cpl more again.

I've found a number of our service stations here only have 91(E10) or 98.... Not much of a choice there.

Especially if E10 is not recommended for your car.

XR6 runs just fine on 91, XR8 needs min 95.

Another trick i have noticed is BP putting only there premium diesel out the front on the main pumps and you have to fill up with " truck deisel " round back if you want the normal stuff. Nice little earner for them that one

I say it is a trick, never knew there was a difference in Diesel except for biodegradable diesel fuel.

Its only 2c a litre more than truck diesel...whereas 91 to 98 is up to 20c a litre more !!!!! My diesel runs better on the Premium diesel at either BP or Caltex. 2c a litre is no big deal....But I wish something could be done about 98!!!!

I don't know if this is a widespread thing but when I fill up the X-Trail with BP premium diesel (which is once a month), I get 2c a litre off whatever the advertised price is (last fill it was $1.21/L with the impromptu discount). In any case, it's cheaper than Caltex/Woolies diesel with the 4c/L discount with the voucher.

Premium Diesel ?? What's that.
In the country there's diesel and there's winter mix.

Most diesels will run on coconut oil,(as Rudolph intended) chip fat or Jatropha as long as its been filtered then filtered then filtered again.

Not in a modern common rail diesel.

Nothing "modern" about common rail, My Cummins VT903 has a common rail fuel system approx.. 1963.
Plenty of electrically controlled (modern) common rail diesel running up to B95

A modern common rail operates at insane pressures and the filtration is crucial, I wouldn't want to be running chip oil

That difference sounds about right, but 98 only about 5-6c more.
I stick with 91, I did the math about 10 years ago, cant remember the result, except that it wasnt worth the extra cost.

Noticing no difference in litres per klm in either the FG or the wives Elantra.

Slight difference in responsiveness but nothing a bit more pedal pressure doesn't fix.

Yea only 2 cents dearer at the moment but watch the gap get bigger over time

This Tuesday filled up with 98 at 7Eleven (Mobile) -1,36/L where 91 was 1,22/L.

Not sure about it,coz for me buying 91 it is waste of money plus it is a crap ,dirtiest fuel U can get.

Why ?, Well only once I filled up full tank 69 L with Shell 91 and done only about 350 km

(then car was brand new FG XR6 T)
On full tank of 98 i can make between 560-620 km (.BTW once on 100 RON from United i done 770 km Melbourne -Bright-Melbourne)

So i can't see any value in buying 91 and saving $ 2or 5 on full tank ,then make about 100 km less than on 95 or 98 RON.

And finally talking about Shell ,stay away from them. Shell from few months is a big rip off, petrol is 6-8 cents more expensive than from other distributors.

It's price gouging.
They know that most newer cars require 95 min.
91 is/was for more for the Australian manufactured car market.
And we know where that went.

About 15 minutes ago.G'day..91 was $1.36 and 95 was $1.51...at our local Caltex. Both gone up a couple of cents since yesterday week (last time I topped up )..Cheers Rod
