Default LW lack of torque and replacement gear knob

Yeh I know, weird title. Firstly any hints on getting more torque out of the 2 litre LW manual and anyone had issues with gear knob getting soft and disintegrating over time.? Replacement ideas?

Interesting re the lack of torque. It 202nm at 4000rpm or so so just a conventional motor. The very latest Corolla has round about the same power and torque.

I have heard people talk about putting in K@N air filters (I think) to improve performance.

The MkI 85KW Engine was like that. Nothing much below 4,000rpm. A Herrod Custom Tune fixed that, though so you could look into a decent Flash Tune.
