Importing from overseas??

Anyone got some tips or links to sites that help you find out what/& how much tax you pay when importing parts or something like a guitar from over the USA
I never purchased something over $1000 before but now I have two things I would like to get that are under 5g a piece
Anyone in the know??????

Not sure on duty on used parts (assuming there used) but you'll have to pay GST on the CIF (cost including freight) value of the parts

Yeah so I take it it'll be in the 10% range I think I have to pay $50 for a Warehoused Communication of Import Declaration

I take it most people try and get the seller to lower the price on whatever paperwork they fill out to get the get down

Yes make sure you have permission to offload . Or they'll charge you big time !! Last car I imported was through federal gov dept . Get ALL the forms and paperwork done BEFORE purchase or shipping ! (JDM WRX) Family has Subaru grey import in NZ . Fitted with STI parts .

already tried with the guitar but they have a contract with the supplier to not fudge the numbers on receipts so they are not allowed

not looking at getting the stroker kit just yet

Speaking of JDM, I was looking at getting a ST205 Celica GT4, ~$10k to QLD which is pretty good. But I cannot road register it because Toyota sold 2/10's of F all back in the day.

So it seems its a safety concern not having ADR's etc, but if I wish I could get a Model T and daily that.

This country is backwards sometimes I swear.

be wary of lowered values on forms. If it goes wrong insurance may only pay out on the stated value not true value or customs may also have you both for fraud if you claim full value on insurance.

I have bought many large items new from the states and never ever paid any duty that I am aware of. The postal cost always seemed to cover the fees and the seller needs to provide all aspects of transaction. Don't pay a cent untill everything is above board and don't be bullied or pressured by deadlines and supposed discount prices etc.

ive had one large item around the 7 to 8 grand area from memory and it was customs held whilst they worked the charge and I payed it then was released for pick up and from memory it cost me about a further grand (was my whipple supercharger kit

)

If you're just buying goods, parts, etc, It very simple and straight forward.
You just buy it, and the seller ships it. Simples.
Whoever they ship it with, will deliver it, if necessary through their local agent.

It must have a customs declaration on it, and if its over $1,000, it will be held up and you'll get a phone call to pay the duty. Usually its just the GST. On more expensive stuff you may get slugged for actually import duties, depending on the country of origin.

Having the seller under declare the value works for anything close to $1k, but if its something that is obviously worth more, customs may still flag it.

With something like a stroker kit, it may pay to split it up, just depends on the freight charges.
We recently imported a pump from SA. Airfreight from Joburg was $735 (USD) vs $750 to sea freight from Durban. We had to pay 10% GST, plus 5% general duty. In our case the freight was only to the Perth Airport, and we just had Toll collect it and clear it for us.

I do this sort of thing all the time.

If it's sent via postage, Australia Post or EMS will contact you to get duties and taxes payment for the goods when they arrive in Australia.

If it's via TNT, DHL etc, they will contact you same way for payment before delivery.

If you choose another method you will need your own customs agent (Many on google) who will deal with the duties and taxes on your behalf. They charge about $100 for their services.

Whichever way you go, make sure that your contact details are accurate on the paperwork at the senders end. If you are unable to be contacted by whoever needs to get payment, your goods will be left in a warehouse accumulating storage fees until payment is made. This can get expensive.
