Hey,
This was a problem a while ago on my mk2 but seemed to dissapear. For a while now the clutch cable seems to be sticking...when i first start the car i have to push the clutch in and out a few times to "loosen" it up, sometimes its so hard that i have to put a fair bit of effort in to first push it in. I figure this is the outer clutch cable melting somewhere near the block and restricting the inner cable from releasing correctly. Today it got to the point where when changing gears, once the clutch has been let out, the car revs for a second then finally engages. It also feels that the car has lost power, when i put my foot down a bit it has lost the once good response. Has anyone had anything similar happen to them?...any ideas? My first thought was maybe a braided clutch cable to prevent it melting again. Thanks, Glenn

Sometimes they get gunked up and are slow to enguage as the cable binds up inside on the dry gease. With regular use it show fix itself, but a squirt of lithium grease on the cable helps no end.....bit of a pain to remove and refit though.

hmm yeah good ideas. Thanks guys.
I have a can of lithium grease lying around somewhere so ill try loosen it up a bit. Ill also have a look at the release bearing while im at it. Thanks again.

Well before i even got a chance to check it out, the clutch gave way. Turns out it wasn't the cable after all. With a gear change from 2nd to 3rd it lost it all together. Im glad i wasn't in heavy traffic. After using whatever momentum i had to get me off the road, and towed to the shop, i was told the internals had pretty well collapsed. I guess its time for a new clutch

At least you didn't too muck time trying to fix it yourself!!!
On the problem of clutches.......My clutch, only when car is warm (in traffic), is shocking. If I try to take off with any, and I mean any, throttle the whole car shakes. It is ok when taking off down hill and much, much worse taking off up hill...It doesn't slip when changing gears as I thought it might.... Any suggestions?? |
