Default Capri 1972 V6 body number

I have a 1972 capri the paint work in the engine bay is relatively tidy but there is no sign of the body number, so before i get to carryed away scraping paint off looking for a number could some one either post a picture of where it should be, or give us an acurate description, I think it should be near the d/s strut top on the engine side? is that right Any help would be great Thanks again B

if it's not on a strut tower then look on the floor near ther drivers between the sill and the edge of the seat base...usually there is a cut out in the carpet that should reveal the chassis number.

If you are really lucky the engine number will match!

It's possible that strut tower/inner wing(s) may have been replaced - the reasoning behind Ford stamping numbers on the floor pan is that if that gets damaged usually the car is beyond repair!

Although I've heard of floor pans being 'completey replaced too...'

Hi Beau,

It will be on top of the drivers side shock tower, curved around the hole for the strut top. It should be between two of the three strut bolts (between the one closest to the drivers side guard and the one closest to the front of the car).

I might even go out tonight and start scratching off the paint I will let you know how I go, will check the floor aswell. Thanks B

I've never seen a number stamped on the floor for Capris, but it certainly would have been a good idea I reckon.

Thanks found it first go, it was under heaps of primer and paint between strut bolts not stamped very deep but you can read it
When did they change from the radiator support to the strut tower? Thanks again for you help,

Hi Beau,

From early 1971 the body number moved to the strut top from the slam panel in front of the radiator. 1970 capris had the slam panel number (the CK number) and a strut top number (a J number which was also the engine number). The J number was stamped in between the two engine side strut bolts parallel with the engine.

Do you have a V6 capri you're restoring?

Back when I used to live in the UK...I did quite a bit of work on Fords of all models they had chassis numbers on the floorpan too...I also know that 'other' identifier numbers' were placed elsewhere on body shells by Ford.


I could'nt count the number of these older fords I sent to the crusher...

Its a 1972 V6 but im putting a 351 toploader and 9 inch in it, its a bit of a waste of a V6 GT but I have it and its easyer than hunting down another capri to do, OH well

Hi Ernie,

I wish Ford Australia had the additional stampings here, it would make it that little bit harder to make a fake car (but I guess it would still happen). That said, an extra floorpan stamping on an Aussie Capri would help those whose car has been in a front-on accident in the past and had the slam panel or inner guard replaced, and subsequently lost the body stamping.

I almost wish I had a Capri 1600 shell I could sell to you, especially if your V6 is a matching numbers car in original condition. I'm with Terry (ford3000gt) here, in that I prefer to see the 4cyl cars converted to V8s, but you are right that it's hard to track down a good Capri shell these days. There are a few of them on ebay currently, including a nice looking v8 conversion (minus engine and g/box). Could be an option?

Default The last letter

On my compliance plate the last letter looks like a R it could be a P as it is not in real good condition but on the body I think it is a P, what one makes sense or could it be either. CK17MC29...R Thanks

It will most likely be a P, as that is usually the last character in the number, although I have seen a few cars with C at the end.

Does your car have the original engine (same number as the body/serial number)?

I was leaning towards an R but it must be P you reckon, ive taken the plate off from the back it looks like a R from the front maybe P but the end looks a bit squashed, no hasnt got the original engine. cheers
