Cyclone Debbie.

Cyclone Debbie is due to cross the coast south of Townsville (Ayr). Tomorrow morning around 7 ish. It will cut a swath of destruction up to 100klm either side of land fall.
It is probably going to be as destructive or worse than Cyclone Yasi.
Possibly a CAT 4 (very destructive).. Batten down kids.

Yasi was about 1600km across and Debbie is about 1300-1400km across.
Hopefully it keeps on track to cross the coast in the undeveloped area.
One thing I have noticed this time (lived in Cairns for 25 years and went through all the big ones) is the early evacuation calls and free transport to get out of the area.

Unfortunately I don't think it is going to hit an undeveloped area according to the latest forecast. Hope you are right though.

They're saying between Ayr and Bowen now so that'd be good, as in best case scenario.

BOM are saying (as of 11.08 AEST) "Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie is forecast to make landfall as a severe tropical cyclone between Ayr and Cape Hillsborough, north of Mackay, on Tuesday morning."

That's about a 280km stretch of coastline including quite a few towns and the Whitsunday Islands, hope everyone get to safety in time and don't leave it to the last minute, next advice will be issued by 2:00 pm AEST Monday 27 March.

Yep, the notice went out yesterday but many started to go the day(s) before due to the Airlines cancelling flights...

Cyclones are very unpredictable where they make landfall, take Cyclone Marcia fro example.

February 19 2015, we (and the media) thought it was going to hit Mackay region, late that afternoon, Marcia decide to change direction and head south to the Rockhampton region.
The next morning Rockhampton region had very strong winds and if you didn't prepare properly you had many issues coming.
So who knows where its going to hit, I know I am prepared

They are certainly notorious for their indecision. I reckon I've been through at least a dozen of them including Larry and Yasi.
All you can do is be as ready as you can for anything.

Townsville is at the moment on the fringe of Debbie. As of 6.15 am, we are starting to get some rain and big wind gusts. God help those in the impact area.

my last camping trip we had 70km/h gusts trying to relocate my tent. for people like me who have never experienced these events, its hard to comprehend winds 4 times stronger than what we had.

Family and friends made it through with minimal damage in Mackay. Our house and shed all good. Trampoline and chook pen survived after I star picketed them down.

Brother in-law lives in prossie, lost roof on old shed. Lives in old fibro house on stilts, house was shaking at 8am, I don't know how this house did not blow away.

And it's still raining up there - most unusual.
It's because she was so slow moving.
The rain only adds to the confusion and feelings of helplessness and makes it much tougher to get started on the clean up.

It was a long cyclone. But the sustained wind was no where near a bad cyclone. In Mackay anyway. We dodged a bullet.

The cyclone may have gone. But there are thunderstorms and ridiculous amounts of rain. Rivers flooding. I have 5 inches of water at my back door.

ULP91 is cheap in cyclone areas. Its almost 20c more expensive here in Victoria!

Power outages are currently affecting 63,000 homes and businesses across the entire local district. Ergon is reporting it could take "weeks" to restore power to some parts due to the extensive level of damage caused by Ex-TC Debbie.

-- WATER SUPPLY --
**EDIT** Issues with water supply in Mackay have now been rectified.

-- SCHOOLS --
All schools in the local region are to remain closed now until Term 2.

-- EVACUATIONS --
Evacuation advice has been given to residents who live downstream of Kinchant Dam and Middle Creek Dam. These dams are overflowing at an alarming rate after incredibly heavy rainfall today.

-- FLOODING --
The BOM have issued a MAJOR FLOOD warning for the Pioneer River with up to 1100mm (43.3 inches) of rain recorded in some parts of the catchment in the last 48 hours.

There has been flooding in some areas along the river today.

There is also flash flooding occurring in parts of Mackay right now as heavy rain has been moving through today.

There has been severe flooding in parts of Eton today, as well as some areas of Walkerston, with many homes inundated with water.
There may have been flooding in Mirani today too, but we haven't been able to receive any reports from the area.

Whopping totals recorded, as of 9:30pm tonight, totals recorded so far include:

• 1217mm (47.9 inches) at Dalrymple Heights
• 898mm (35.4 inches) at Marian
• 867mm (34.1 inches) at Eton

• 779mm (30.7 inches) at Finch Hatton Gorge
• 764mm (30.0 inches) at Proserpine
• 743mm (29.3 inches) at Sarina
• 666mm (26.2 inches) at Walkerston
• 627mm (24.7 inches) at Pindi Pindi
• 592mm (23.3 inches) at Gargett
• 582mm (22.9 inches) at Mirani

Debbie was a bit if a fizzer here in Yap-Hoon, although many local roads are cut.

Most rain we got was before the cyclone last week when in one day we got 250mm.

So far the heaviest rain was yesterday 155mm.

A bit of a storm last night and that wuz it. A bit of light debris about.

For a week local warnings have been to stay home, shops closed, blah, blah, blah

It seems Debbie went around us, fortunately. A lot of locals were spooked because of Yasi a couple of years ago when Yap-Hoon copped a hammering.
