Hello, i just purchased a '99 cougar, 141000 kms, Australian model, the day after i bought it it started to surge/lose power and a banging/thud like sound coming from underneath that gets worse. to get it home i found having it in S mode and turning the O/D off made a difference.
ive read through the forum and cant find this problem, particularly with the thumping noise, any help would be appreciated cheers Marlo |

Hay,
sounds like a dirty fuel filter. Filter is under the car at the rear driver side. Some where there from memory. |

Not real sure ever, butcher by trade contact "the arrow" his cougar's a 99 & he should, would know a lot more.

Doesn't sound like one of the "usual" problems maybe a loose egine or transmission mount but you will have to get your mechanic to check for you.
Thinking about it you might have more than one problem. How full was the petrol tank??

just had it fixed and the problem was a failed inhibitor switch, i didnt think that an electrical problem could cause the loud banging sound, but wrong i was.
$400 parts and labour and it now drives like a dream, hope this might be useful for someone else having the same dramas. cheers Marlo |

Good news Marlo however you need to be aware that for a car of your vintage the fuel pump will always be a potential problem.
As you are new owner you should also get your ATX checked thoroughly and if possible fit a transmission cooler cos this will save you a lot of headaches in the near future (believe me this is worth it whatever it costs). Regards Dave
