Tinting

Having just ordered my Mondeo (hatch) I haven't yet decided on whether to tint or not (factory or not). Reading other threads - I note:

Pro's
- Looks great
- Reduces temperature (wonderful summer sun) - the normal tint that comes with it may not have any material effect. Especially with the large heat generator (the hatch window). Temperature may also be very important, especially other commentary about how effective the airconditioning is at cooling.

Cons
- Can't see anything out the back - reversing at night? Maybe a reversing camera might provide an additional alternative.
- Cost

How's everyone who has gone down the path feel so far - especially if you had it in last summer?

My last two cars(the EL XR6 and current BA XR8) Didn't have tint when I first got them. When I got the EL done it made a massive difference, i got used to it.
Then i got the XR8 and immediately noticed how bad it was without tint. Especially driving at night with peoples light behind you.
It makes a great difference in my opinion. The only car Im not going to do it on is my 1966 XR Falcon, purely because it's not an everyday car and I don't think it suits older type cars that well.

As an alternative you could go into the aftermarket tint places and say that you want tint, but not too dark.

I love the tint on my Mondeo, this is my third car with aftermarket tint the last two being a VZ Adventra and a VY Series I Commodore wagon.

For me it is the first thing I have done when buying a car now, all three of these cars were tinted before delivery by whoever the dealers used.

Reversing at night can be a pain, I find I rely on my parking sensors a lot.

Haven't had it long enough to experience a summer with it, but the thought of hot leather isn't appealing. Too many memories of hot vinyl seats in my parents cars as a child.

I tinted my 1st car myself when tint came out in the early 80's and have had every car since tinted. Wouldnt go without it now.

Car is much cooler, looks better and no glare. Whats that old saying "once you've had black, u'll never go back"

Probably cheaper to have it done aftermarket. Usually takes about 2 hours.

I went for tinting through the dealer at $250, although they tried to charge me $500 at first, until I pointed out that my wifes Pajero only cost $220.

I find it stops the glare from headlights of the cars behind, and the reduced vision when reversing reported by some of the guys is not apparent.

The car also looks better on the road with the darker glass.

I would certainly recommend that you go with the tint.

The Mondeo is the first car I have not gotten tinted by the dealer. A frind now owns a tinting dealership, so will do it at cost. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Yesterday was the first real sunny day we have had since I got the car. The factory tint on the XR5's seems worthless. Didn't seem to make any difference.

I also saw another Sea Grey Mondeo yesterday, which had a dark (not privacy) tint on the rear windows and lighter tint on the front. Looked pretty good.

I am going for darkest legal available - I drive more at day than at night and with Perth's climate, makes sense.

Speaking of sun protection, anyone seen a dashmatt for the Mondeos?

Had my sea grey mondeo tinted and it looks fantastic, really matches that color.

Living in Karratha it really wasn't a choice. And i have been looking for a custom-made dash matt but haven't spotted one yet

I asked the same question on this forum a few months back and as ususal the advice was spot on - get the tint, whether it's by the dealer or after market is your call.

Dealers will always give you a discount on the tinting, particularly if packaged with paint and fabrtic protection. No doubt they build in huge markups so you the customer appear to get the 'win' when they drop the price.

Have dash mats ever been genuine parts? Every one I've bought has always been OEM.

I don't think I'll get a dash mat for the Mondeo because I really like the lines of the dash.

As for tinting, I got quite a dark one. They had a Falcon FPV on the floor when I was ordering the Mondeo and I said I wanted a dark tint like it had. I think the dealer wrote 20% on the order form. And the best news: they chucked the tinting in 'free'.

But don't the exposure to the sun will make the surface brittle?

Fingers crossed I'm hoping they've cured that problem. When I think back to the gallons of Armor-All I have spread on dashboards over the years ...

Can't stand Armour-all on the dash - it shines and reflects from the windscreen too much.

Plus I need to give the car another bath before photos - damm road works under the Narrows Bridge this morning spewing dirty water onto the road means my nicely polished paint work (from Sunday) is now covered with splash marks :(

I don't think you can put them on an XR5 unfortunately :( I would have definately gone for mudflaps if they were an option.

I had them on my Liberty RX2.5 and it really helped keep the paint work looking good.

hmmm you are right,slightly confused here is it not basically the same car as my TDCi surely you can make them fit throw the fittings away and screw them on y/n?

The XR5 has, as part of the bodykit, a moulding on the sill which I would imagine prevents the standard flap being fitted.
Mine came with spats attached to the moulding which goes some way to replicate the profile of the mudflap.
Probably not as effective as standard flaps, but not that bad as to be pointless.

Some photos below:

Car is a bit dirty and camera was nearly running out of batteries.
Tint is MidNight Express, done by TintaCar Cannington. Hasn't been cleaned as yet as is still under 48 hours old. Can't wind windows down for 48 hours and not meant to clean for at least 21 days.
Tint on Sunroof is factory.
Personally I love it!

Beautiful - plus now I've seen your licence plate - will be able to spot you on our streets (Perth) ;-)

I can't have a car with a sun roof - I'm too tall from waist up - makes my head poke through the top.

I'm kind of hoping for 1DAD ... when my Mondeo hits in November
