Heard of a few tethered Jailbreaks but I'm completely against tethered.

Best bet would be to either not update to iOS5 until a decent untethered JB is released if it's critical you have a JB'ed iPhone or bear iOS5 standard for awhile until an untethered JB is released.

Jailbreak = Unlocking the phone from Apple's clutches. Means you can run all sorts of apps that are coded by non Apple devs.

Slight clarification there. Non Apple devs means applications that Apple won't allow into their App store. The applications can be developed by anyone.

This is sometimes because it Apple kill off competing apps, which is wrong. And at other times because the developer doesn't adhere to Apple coding practices and sometimes because the app is malware.

I would only recommend that you JB your phone if you feel there is good reason to.

A mate at work was telling me that jailbreaking your iphone no longer voids your warranty, is that true?

I am pretty sure that was always the case in the USA.

If Apple were to deny any claim there would be a discussion about whether the JB caused the problem. Obviously if the phone was bricked you would have trouble but Apple would be hard pressed to say a JB caused a hardware fault

I wasn't expecting ios 5 to be so involved as far as updating was concerned.

Maybe I missed your point.

Updating a 3gs and 4 to ios5 were the easiest and quickest download / update I've done to date. I spent more time going through the settings looking for changes. I do know a few people that had difficulty though.

or maybe you are referring to JB?

i had a few issues upgrading mine.
i made the mistake of not backing up before upgrading, dont normally, never been an issue, until this time.
luckily i had backed everything up a week ago.
i lost all my messages and photos, had to restore back to last week, so wasnt a complete loss in the end.
live and learn..

How have you guys upgraded your phones to ios5 after jail-breaking previously?

Doesn't itunes just give you an error? I'm scared to hit the upgrade button on my 3gs just in-case it doesn't let me because its jail broken.

I have a JB ios4... Haven't thought about upgrading to 5 yet.

If you don't have the new handset with the wisbang camera it wouldn't be of much benefit to upgrade would it? Well, not str8 away anyway..?

JamesR was yours JB when you updated?

I'm lucky my update was so smooth (so I don't understand why some had problems).

RiTz I like the notifications feature on the lockscreen. Apart from that, the reason I upgraded... a few friends claimed their phones were working heaps better blah blah blah.

2 other new features that my friends like (and I don't use), WiFi sync and iCLOUD(?) for sharing with your other apple gear I think.
