Default Petrol and Diesel to be banned in France by 2040.

Just seen this on ABC news this morning. Had to do a google search.

Here's more http://www.independent.co.uk/environ...-a7826831.html

I thought this was supposed to be happening by 2025?

2040 is along time away.

I actually read something about this today, its likely to just be certain cities like Paris etc..

Apparently most of France is full of old cars.

Also I'm still slightly sceptical about ev vehicles due to the massive environmental impact the manufacturing of batteries has on the planet. Not sure exactly how viable it is.

Just my opinion

There are a lot of Trucks that travel through France to get between the UK and the rest of Europe.

last I check they all used Diesel.

So perhaps they just meant inner cities

In the grand scheme of things, this is a good idea. These small cities that have large populations in a confined area would also have pollution from ICEs and the like focused on the area. By reducing even the pollution of cars it would, in theory, improve the air quality.

The following is a good article around manufacturing of electric cars and their batteries.
https://www.wired.com/2016/03/teslas...t-green-think/

In summary, overall, electric cars are kinder to the environment than conventional ICE based cars, even taking into account build and powering them. With technology improving hand over fist in conjunction with mass investment into battery and alternative renewable energy infrastructure, more countries are going go down this route sooner rather than later.

Volvo is effectively cutting out ICEs from their range in the next couple of years.

some interesting reading here
https://www.theatlantic.com/business...europe/528990/

also by 2040 i don't think we will have cars as we do now at all, it will be versions of public transport. maybe small autonomous buses or taxis and high speed rail.

also by that time i'm hoping to be off grid and just lease a new EV bubble to get to work while doing what i can to find 98 ron fuel for my GT for weekends (or track days as i won't be allowed on the road)

Who's going to question the validity of a story like that when the time line is so far out?

10 years ago no one in the world owned an iPhone. I wouldn't question what could happen in the next 23 years

BYD in China last year made more then 100,000 electric cars and 15,000 electric buses.
so it's happening. While people are focused on the marketing of Tesla, the Chinese are just getting on with it.

And where is all this extra electricity going to come from.
Don't tell me wind and solar. It won't be up to it.
The energy needed to power the replacement of millions of cars and trucks is enormous.

Nuclear power stations, whether we like it or not.

Maybe now the Tide/Wind/Solar infrastructure might not be up to demand but in time it will improve to the point where coal fired power stations will eventually cease, we might not see it in our life time but sure future generations will see this.

Except France is also simultaneously reducing its nuclear generation by 50% with increased renewables filling the gap. This is crazy, but then again French politicians have alway been bat-poo crazy. The new French PM thinks in a way that few other people can comprehend (that is a quote from the new PM's press secretary).

Correct.
they are now ahead of the USA for nuclear power generation.

2015-2016 saw nuclear power increase from 161-210 billion kwH.
36 reactors operating, 21 under construction and still more to start.
At least they have a closed nuclear fuel cycle.

Wind and solar infrastructure are up. but their 5 year plan has them focusing on transmission at the moment not more wind/solar....
