Default Rare (for AUS) Mondeo

Can someone here buy this please!

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d.../?Cr=0&sdmvc=1

I drove on of this a bit while working with Ford and they are a very very nice overall package and actually not that slow. This car was actually benchmarked for the FG 18' ride quality. Engine rev's out quite nicely.

The colour, interior etc look smashing. Not a bad price really..if I didnt love my TE so much id hit him up.

There's one of these in Perth, saw it a couple of weeks ago and wondered how it got here seeing as they were never officially sold here. Must have been a private import.

Yeah all import, I can only assume FoA chopped or sent theirs back. It was a lighter grey than that.

I like it!
I have a picture (that I got of the web years ago) of the Red Leather interior and it looked so cool!

Certainly unique in this country...
MK3 ST220:
- 280Nm @ 4900rpm
- 8.6kg/kw (1431kg/166kw)
- 6Spd Manual FWD
Mk4 XR5T
- 320Nm @ 1500-4800rpm
- 9.8kg/kw (1586kg/162kw)
- 6spd manual FWD
with UK versions having a v-e-r-y wide range of custom-order leather interiors. AUS market is just too small for wide variation - our XR5 (UK ST eqv) had 1 interior option.

OK, so the Mk4 is lardier, but the max torque come in sooo much earlier. It'snot all about revs when driving.
Visit NZ, and there are Mk3 Mondeos everywhere (just like Falcons this side of the ditch)

There was also a Mk2 Mondeo ST24 2.5lt V6,
and anyone remember the Sierra Sapphire Cosworth ?

......and by way of comparison
WRX 2010 G3 2.5lt (not STI or ClubSpec)
343Nm @ 4000rpm
7.43kw/kw (1450kg/195kw)
5spd manual, AWD

My area of 'expertise' is with the V6 Mondeos, in particular the mk2 ST24 (which I own) and the mk3s (which I've always admired from afar).
Until now. I have bought this Mondeo!
I'm from Melbourne and have been in regular contact with the owner for a little while, trying to get as much information as possible about the car as it being in Brisbane, a personal inspection was out of reach.
I flew up to Brisbane Easter Sunday morning and drove the car straight back to Melbourne, arriving back yesterday.
19+ driving hours isn't always enjoyable but this certainly was.
The 220 didn't miss a beat and was very smooth and comfortable.
I kind of likened it to my ST24, but larger, quieter and more refined.
There really is a noticeable difference between the build quality of the mk3s compared to the mk2s.
The car has an interesting history with it being a UK delivered vehicle, I was curious as to how it got to be on our shores.
It was owned by an Irish couple who bought it in 2007 when they were living in Manchester. They were the car's second owner and when they moved back to Ireland in 2008, they took the car back with them.
When the guy was offered a job in Australia in 2011, part of his deal was that he would receive a shipping container to fill with whatever they wanted to bring with them. As the house they were going to move into here was fully furnished, they decided not to bring any furniture, and instead they filled their container with the ST!
The car is fully optioned apart from the Denso Sat Nav unit (which was a £1850 option at the time) and has far more features than the ad stated, which is wonderful.
Its been well looked after but is now quite possibly in the hands of the most fastidious owner it could have, I'm a real Mondeo enthusiast and so happy I've been able to pick up this rare piece (in Australia, anyway) of Ford motoring.
The aftermarket cone filter which was already on the car when they bought it is going to make way for a stock factory unit and the 18" ST220 wheels need a total refurb, but other than that its in really nice, factory condition.
She's only going to be brought out now on sunny days and some Ford days, cos let's face it, only some Ford or Mondeo fans really know what it is!
So even though this thread is over 6 months old, I thought it was worth digging up to share this little piece of news and update the thread. 😄

Very well done mate. Im waiting on news of a job transfer so taking that car out to the sticks was not really in its best interest. But if I was staying in the city I was considering selling the TE50 and buy that to lower my fuel costs and I miss having a manual.

I love the car and like I said before I drove what was probably the only other one in the country while working with Ford. To add to your fact file the ride and handling with the 18's equipped on this was used as a bench mark for the FG falcon.

Hi Polyal,
Thank you!
I did read with keen interest that point regarding the ride quality benchmarking, I think that's a wonderful little piece on Info!
In which city were you working with Ford when you drove it? I wonder if its still in the country?
Selling your TE50 though, goodness that'd be like choosing which child you should sell, I'd love to have a TE50!
The owner said he'd hardly fielded any enquiries about the car, we both figured it was only due to there not being a lot of people who recognised what it was. I saw the ad ages ago and thought well that would be nice to own, then kind of forgot about it until I saw it was still for sale in early January. That's when I thought I needed to buy it, I couldn't have it going to some P Plater who would ruin it! Haha
So sorry to be the bearer of bad news to you, but be safe with the knowledge it's going to have a very loved and pampered life from now!

Hey Damo,
That's a good idea, I'll do that when I've had a chance to work some detailing magic on it, plus I need to repair the lower front part of the bumper which has hit a kerb at some point, which I did know about before I bought it.
When she's gleaming I'll do exactly that.
Thanks!

Well yeah I was in two minds about it, I actually asked if he was keen on swapping my TE for it but I believe the car was surplus to their needs? The look of the car is quite like my falcon actually, subtle, nice interior with enough mumbo.

The ST220 that I drove has either been sent back to the UK or its long gone (ie crushed). Any development cars used by FoA are not allowed to be sold (official line anyway) even if they are full production models (liability). Many nice cars, old GT prototypes etc met a similar fate.

I used to give that one a flogging from Geelong to Lara on the odd occasion. Drove it to Avalon once but I cant remember the exact reason. Loved revving it out.

Good to know it went to someone who understands it.

Yeah, exactly that... They needed a seven seater, got one, and well yes it was left over.
Jeez what a shame if it got crushed, the fact they DO crush so many nice, rare cars...
The 3.0ltr V6 Duratec is a willing revver, a very smooth engine.

Great car, one of my favourite Fords especially in wagon form.

They were sold new in NZ too.

Be nice if they had a revving NA engine in the new one for a ST model...guess we are stuck with Ecoboosts now. Something like the Alfa 156 GTA setup

A nice revving boosted engine is the way to go. I had a 2ltr turbo in a Nissan a couple years ago, revved to make a max power at the rear wheels of 275rwkw at 7700rpm and power did not drop off, best of both worlds.

You lucky bugger! Awesome... I'd been 'stalking' the car for months on Carsales and, if getting an EsCos hadn't worked out, I'd have jumped at it. I've always loved the Mk 3 Mondy and seeing an ST220 for sale - locally! - got me really excited. Sounds like you'll be the perfect new owner for the car...

Hi Bigshotdan,
Thank you!
I was thrilled to have the chance to buy this, there are a handful of mk3 Mondeos in the country, but as far as my research has gone, this is the only ST220.

May as well use this opportunity for a little update on her progress in the last two months...

Since I bought it, she's basically been in the hands of my mechanic and body shop guy having a multitude of things done. Being an ex UK car, the main thing has been to try to
'de-UKify' it! The crap and stuff that sticks to the undercarriage is unlike anything you find on or under an Aussie car, with seized bolts, things needing a thorough clean etc it must be the bloody salt they put on the roads there...

The body has had all scuffs, dents etc removed, the front bumper completely re-done, all new suspension components, new brake discs and pads, new tail lights, badges etc
Basically every part that was showing any sign of corrosion or UK road crap has been replaced or is going to be replaced soon.
A full paint correction has been done as well so the newly painted panels match seamlessly with the factory painted ones.
The factory 18" wheels were in a far worse state of repair than initially thought, they've been taken off the car and at some stage in the future I'll get them refurbished and so for now the car is sitting on 19x8.5" Focus RS alloys in silver which look absolutely amazing.
The list of things to do now has been whittled down a fair bit, the factory exhaust is showing signs of rust in the rear mufflers and will be replaced soon with a Milltek cat-back stainless system from the UK.
As for driving it, it's a delight. The engine is superb, so smooth and free revving and especially now as she's had a Bluefin remap installed.
Some of the standard features on the car are a knockout, for example every car should have a heated front windscreen, it's so much easier than operating the a/c to clear the screen!

I still plan on uploading pictures of her and as she's now getting very close to what I wanted her to look like when I bought her, that won't be far away so I'll update again soon.
Thanks for reading! Andy.

Hi guys I'm actually trying to upload some pics just now, I have a couple of recent ones but I'm a bit of a dummy all of a sudden it seems, I can't quite remember how I did it before. I know the thing to click on, it's getting the URLs copied and pasted I'm having trouble with on my iPad, doesn't seem to want to behave... I am trying though!
Yeah I didn't want to make it a 'project car' I had actually bought loads of parts for it from the UK before I'd even picked the car up! Haha I can be impatient!

I fluked that somehow, I'm trying to fluke some more!
Well spotted! the tail lights are from the final facelift, mid 2005. They look much nicer.
Mine being a 2004 was a 'first' facelift which added 6 speed gearbox and updated and better quality dash, trim and premium Sony sound system.

Well spotted! the tail lights are from the final facelift, mid 2005. They look much nicer.
Mine being a 2004 was a 'first' facelift which added 6 speed gearbox and updated and better quality dash, trim and premium Sony sound system.
Ha! Well done... yeah, hopefully you can fluke some more!

I know these little differences because that's how keen on the ST220 I've been for quite some time. I was in the UK when the Mk 3 was displayed at the UK Motor Show and was hoping we'd get them here. Of course, it was the one generation Ford Oz skipped...

There...got a few more pics up.
Yes, IMO the best looking Mondeo Ford have made didn't end up getting sold here.
You really know your ST220s! That's so cool!
I couldn't be happier, it's just a lovely car all round, and obviously I never thought I'd actually ever own one until a few months ago. It's fairly sedate if you want it to be but when you put your foot down she has a wonderful intake growl and is pretty quick.
Now I think I have figured out the pic rigamarole, I'll get a few more up if the sun ever comes out again and shines down!

Right well maybe I should have got it..LOL..I think your a more committed owner than I am though!

With the colours of the two cars it would be interesting to have this and my TE50 next to each other. They have the same general feel about them IMO.
