Default I want a 4x4/suv for a daily driver/boat towing

I'm looking to buy in the next few months a 4x4 or suv for a good daily driver/family car and also to tow a boat too, preferably a diesel but need help on what to buy around the 15k mark. I have a few in mind like territory or ranger but also like the old ford bronco 351 on gas, very confused would like your thoughts...

Cheers,

Andrew

Stick with the latest model diesel you can find - really think triton/ bt50/ranger/rollux/Navara are all fairly similar ps. get one with all the accessories that you think you need

Diesel Territory is a good thing Andrew although you probably won't get one for 15 grand unfortunately. PJ and PK Rangers are a good thing for that kind of money. My young fella has one with 200k on the clock and still going strong.

I prefer a ford but if it's unaffordable I will look elsewhere

Andrew

if you not afraid of a few km's you can get a terri from pickles auctions
but the old 4.0 is great for towing just not great on fuel
i would say more comfortable than any dual cab ute in that price bracket and maybe any new dual cab ute (back seats suck even in a new ranger)
here is a diesel for under $13k but its in QLD
https://www.pickles.com.au/cars/item...oors/452236647

or one in Belmore

Personally I'd be doing research before commiting. Modern diesels seem to be potential money pits when things go wrong. A low-price, high-mileage TD might seem good value at the pump, but servicing and repairs for overall cost of ownership?

A mate of mine bought one for $10k 2 years ago with 240k on the clock. Highway miles with a perfect service history, he hasn't had to put a spanner on it.

300k now.

That's the one thing I was worried about with a terri they all have big kms on them but just checked on car sales and saw a couple with about 150kms on them for 15k which is a lot better I guess

Cheers,

Andrew

For around 15K & diesel I would consider a Pajero.

In that price range though they have lots of KMs Just like the Territory's

This is a bit out of left side. But you obviously are a bit of a performance person.
A Turbo Territory (Ghia). It will give you everything you could wish for and more. If the fuel usage/ cost is a problem get one with a dual fuel.
I did and its done over 150k since the gas was fitted without any problems.
In one of these you can putter around town, great for towing (only towed 1500kg) ,power for passing B Doubles safely, with duel fuel increased range (up to 1000km).
But I am slightly baised.

I actually saw a turbo awd ghia with a 133kms on it for 14k is that worth it? Are they that thirsty? How many kms to a tank do they get? Would a tune improve kms?

Cheers,

Andrew

Why do you want a 4x4?
How big is your boat?
How often will you tow and where?
How important is performance?

Unfortunately there is no simple answer when buying 2nd hand, it all comes down to what you can find on the market. Can't simply say "buy a diesel" without knowing what is on the market where you are.

Looking at your signature, I doubt you'd be happy with a Diesel Terry. They are slugs. Good for towing vans on long hauls if you're a grey nomad and don't care how long it takes. And if anything goes wrong with their crappy old V6, they are notoriously expensive to fix and hard to get parts for.

Depending on the size of your boat, and whether you need to use unsealed or especially steep ramps, the best tow-car is a Falcon on LPG.

Even in a 4wd, petrol engine on lpg is a great option, if you find one at a good price. The downside, especially compared to a Diesel, is range.

If you are looking at a TD, REALLY do your research.
Most of your basic diesels, like the old Toyota and Nissan straight 6's, are almost indestructible, and the donks will keep going long after the body has rusted away. But a lot of the TD's don't have the same reputation. The GU Patrol is a good value 4wd. Unfortunately their 3.0l 4cyl TD earned the nickname "Grenade Motor."
If you can find a decent 4.2TD, grab it. Unfortunately they are mostly now quite old, and usually have whopping kms.

You call the Diesel Territory a slug then recommend a GU patrol???
The TDI territory does 0-100 in 10.7 whist that's nothing flash its ok, but of course its not built for that.
more importantly in can get off the line quickly enough to beat traffic & it can overtake well between 90-115.
IMO does more than enough for a family SUV

I like how the 4x4 sits high, the boat is about 20 foot, most weekends if permits. Performance not a buggy but a bonus that's why I thought maybe a 4.0t terri but not sure. On the flip side I thought for a bit more I could buy a BA GT which is capable and then I have two Guy's too...

Cheers,

Andrew

you could buy an LS1 adventra, just a tune and its a sub 6 sec 0-100 car that can tow 2300kg and go on rough roads and carry lots of gear.
fuel usage is on par with any other petrol 4x4/suv (thirsty)
plus you can get one from $5k
drives better than a commodore, steers more like a falcon i think

Ok, so an SUV like a Terri is a good option. I wouldn't take her off-road, but they are brilliant on-road, and AWD will be plenty for most ramps.
Depending on how she sits, you might want to upgrade the rear springs, or fit airbags.

I have the TTG with LPi. Goes like stink. But economy is lamentable.
But reality is that the basic Barra is more than adequate for a 20ft boat.
My LPG tank is only 63 usable litres, and I have a space-saver spare, but thats because I have the 7-seat model.

I'd recommend a Pajero if you can get a decent one for the money.
Fairly reliable. 3.2 is a strong motor. Not massively big like a Cruiser or a Patrol. Not slugs either.

Any thoughts on a 2004-06 BMW x5 in the 4.4 v8 or 3.0t diesel?

Back in 2013 the wife bought a mazda cx9 08 model luxury pack for 30k. That was a dealer price. It towed my 5.8m bow rider with its heavy 4.3l sterndrive well. It was a big car, 7 seats and all the rest. It was a pig on fuel but had nice road manners. For the year we had it it was a nice car with alot of things you don't need (7 seats with 1 child and seat warmers etc) but was reliable. Absolutely no off road capabilities, but considering it was sold with a 10k loss in 12 months in 14 (a falcon replaced it.. happy days) it may be something to consider. Most parts (engine etc) were stamped fomoco and it seemed to be built ford tough. I'm guessing the prices have dropped. They have a 2000kg towing rating and a 3.7l v6 with 205kw and 350 ish nm of torque to the 6 speed auto. No record breaker, but it went ok.

All defective Ball joints should have been replaced by a recall? any failures now are just poor maintenance just like any other car.

my old man bought an ex cop 2012 pajero in 2013 (9 months old) for $22k with 90,000km on the clock, he loved it so much he ended up buying a new one last year and sold the old one with 130,000km for $26k
its a great tow car and can get 9l/100km daily or 14l/100km with a 1.8t van on the back
its quick too and shamed my old V8 VH commodore

might be a bit more than you wanted to spend though but not a bad car at all just a bit boring and doesn't go round corners that well

I'm thinking I might have to go higher as everything I have seen around the 15k mark have too many kms on them and worried me

Cheers,

Andrew

Put a tow bar on the GT.
