All good...although I wonder what the former Geelong engine factory workers would say about the quality product they used to build and could have built?

This will make you laugh, when I played the 2nd video, I walked out for 10 secs and when I came back I thought it was a 2nd Ford video and saw the Chevy sitting in the background and thought, geez they could have hidden that or they are so confident in their new engine they brought in the opposition to show off the better Ford engine ...

Thanks for the YT advice Franco Cozzo.

Just comparing the GM plan with what Ford is doing:
GM has reworked its old iron block vortec line to make the new 6.6, basically has the
same 4.06" bore as the 6.2 but a longer 3.85" stroke along with Gen V DI and VCT....
Funny part is that GM is sticking with the 6L90 and not upgrading to a HD 10-speed auto.

That would be equivalent to Ford just increasing the bore and stroke on the 6.2 Boss
and calling it job done with the 6R140 6-speed auto - Ford would get panned for that
but GM gets a pass because well, it the GM small block underdog taking in big bad Ford.

Thank goodness Ford went with a two engne strategy, the 6.2 continues in F250 with a
base 6-speed auto and optional 10-speed auto while the 7.3 V8 is available across the
whole F series range.


The new GM 6.6 V8 is rated at 401 HP @5200 and 464 lb ft @4,000 - HD truck power ratings
are de-rated roughly 30 HP and 30 lb ft less than light duty F150 /Silvy 1500 power specs.

IMO It looks like a repeat of what both companies did in the 60's and 70's, with GM operating 2 V8 designs whilst Ford ran 4. Now GM has 1 to Ford running 3.

That’s a good point, because GM fanboys have consistently pointed out how Ford is abandoning V8s to focus on downsizing with EcoBoost. But what we see Ford doing, is giving us all the choices in wngine technologies. Plug in hybrid F-150 coming next year. Full electrification on the way also. I’m sure that tech will come to Super Duty and Medium Duty. I think the 7.3 will be used in hybrid applications also. I have no doubt this engine has been designed for a variety of future applications, as Ford has kind of hinted at that. Just think, they can sell this engine for about $10k less than the diesel with all the emissions hardware. There’s so much Ford can do to reinvest part of that $10k savings and bring the performance up to matching or surpassing the diesel. Eg hybrid, turbos, supercharging. But I’m thinking more hybrid. Especially for medium duty and motor homes.

All these engine choices mean alot more needs to be spent on development though. That will also flow into higher replacement part costs due to next to no commonality between engine platforms. Plenty of people curse the way Ford handled their V8's in the 60's/70's compared to GM's simpler strategy. I think we'll eventually see one of the 6.2 and 5.0 get dropped, and for the sake of Mustang I hope it's the 6.2.

Getting way ahead of ourselves here, the only thing that's changed is the 6.8 V10
is finally going away and the 7.3 V8 being introduced as a better replacement.

Huh? GM had Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Chevrolet, Cadillac V8's that were all different from each other. Not to mention the different engines within each of those divisions, small/big block etc.

GM are also not running one V8 now, the heavy duty engine is not LS based, and they will soon have a DOHC engine for the mid engined Corvette. So it will be 3 each.

Something interesting with regards new 7.3 V8 versus 1960s FE engines,
427 = 4.23" x 3.78"
428 = 4.13" x 3.98"

The old hot rodder trick was to take the 427 block and use a 428 Crank
that made 445 = 4.23" x 3.98"
Turns out the 7.3 is 4.22x3.98 (445ci).

That piston doesnt have very thick ringlands - no more than 8 PSI tops

Throw a set of forged rods and pistons at it

Correct me if I’m wrong...My understanding was the new 5.0 and LS engines in the smaller car categories had gone DI for emissions.

But doesn’t the F250 with this new 7.3 come under a different category for emissions standards?? IE not as strict

The last V6 Commodores are DI.

Thats what the SIDI badge on the boot is for.

It does improve fuel burn as the injector is basically right next to the spark plug so the BANG starts straight a bit before or straight after TDC.

I have heard that some of the later Commodores have major carbon build up problems in the combustion chambers though????

Problem with DI is the carbon on the back of the valves and intake isn't washed off like on a port injected engine.
I know Toyota run both, and I think Ford does too.

Already being shoehorned into a Foxbody. Fit's pretty easily. Plenty of room for the exhaust manifolds. Would need a small cowl hood to clear the front mount throttlebody though. Hopefully Ford sell this as a crate motor with control pack.

Look at how long the runners are on that intake manifold - reminds me of Holden 304 banana manifold.

Not US sized market, but I do see a lot of Rams towing huge caravans, and they really have no competition.

The only F250 I see is a local's, she uses it to pull her horse float. Does a better job and uses less fuel than the Landcruiser it replaced.

Pity we'll never see these vehicles down under.

320kw at 5,500 rpm and 645nm at 4000 rpm. She's strong.

Will be interesting to see if the aftermarket supports it. Some basic mods to bring the powerband up like intake manifold, cam, exhaust etc could turn it into a good street performance engine.

But it's begging for boost. It's been built using turbo spec parts like heavy duty rods, forged pistons, inconel exhaust valves etc, so it would thrive on it.

Aftermarket pistons and rods are on the way, and procharger are working on a supercharger kit. No doubt now this is going to be available as a crate motor if aftermarket companies are already being commisioned by ford to make parts for it.

4.5 inches narrower than a Coyote.
