what v8 are you running?

fully understand the flares, i had the same issue on my surf back in nz, but i got away with none at all, but i had the bunnings flares ready to go if the cops had a whinge lol.

.... sorry to say it but you'd have been better off with a 250 than a 253...

well sort of any way
glad to hear there is some actual plans for it, rather than the constant work in progress beaten up old hiluxes i've seen around

way too long for the engine bay, plus any conversion gear like mounts and bellhousng would have to be custom made which costs a lot more, ya can get 253 conersion gear straight off the shelf.

and dont worry i got big plans for it once i get my cortina out of the shed

In what world would a 250 be a better engine choice than a 253?
I'd take the V8 over the 6 any day.
That being said, I'm definitely not a fan of the 250s, never have been, never will be.
I put them in the same "over rated" category as the 202.

I now have my flame suit on, so fire away.

no need for a flame suit,
it'd be a personal preference thing i guess anyway.
I look at it this way though, they are practically the same size engine. But the characteristics of the 250 are more suited to 4wding than a 253 as the 250 has better low down torque, with its over square stroke. depending on how you set them up. So you're getting a better performing engine. (It's not all about max hp at 10,000 revs with 4wd's)
The 250 is by far a more reliable engine also, far less prone to overrev damage and much cheaper in parts and replacements. Then there is the benefits of how much easier they are to work on. All straight engines are a godsend when you have to get the spanner out.
That'd be the first time i have heard a straight 6 called over rated.

I have no problem with most I6 engines, I just really am not a fan of the 250. 253s are actually pretty gutsy little V8s and in my experience have had plenty of torque across the rev range... but I'm no expert.
I'm more a fan of the 4.0 I6 used in Falcons EB onwards, mainly because I have more experience working on them etc.
A couple of mates of mine have XBs and XCs with 250, one is cross flow, the other pre-cross flow... and they're both pretty gutless. I realise these are old engines but one has been rebuilt in the last 5 years or so.

I saw a great win today for a personalised plate. Was on a Holden HSV something. Plate was (V8 2NV). Pretty clever I think.

you cant really compare a pre crossflow engine with a single barrel carb to a 253, completely different setup.
If you've had a play around on a properly set up 250 you'd sing a different tune (350 holley, alloy head, decent intake manifold, exhaust)
great engines, some of fords finest work! the tractability and reliability - even when they should have failed - is legendary.

Not so much a car fail but a driver fail today. At the traffic lights a 2pm, driver beside us opens his esky and grabs a can of XXXX. Oddly enough the make of car was...... talk about asking for trouble

with a 2v head on a 250 they are a very good engine

although you need very little work to have more power than a 253, comparing them to a 253 is not fair. when i started driving in the late 80's, a 250 was compared to a 202/186, the 302 was compared to the 253 and the 351 to the 308. the biggest engine was compared to the competitors biggest engine. plus holdens have traditionally been smaller, which meant it was fair to compare their smaller engine to fords larger one

Funny how if you ask any holden nut they would compare a their 308 to fords 302 and it wouldn't be considered 'unfair' to compare to a different capacity, yet these days it's the other way around comparing fords 5.4 V8 to holdens 6.0, 6.3, and 7.0. Not to mention now that ford has dropped to a 5.0 and holden just keeps going bigger...
