Smile MC TDCI timing belt replacement

Hi all, the wife recently bought a MC Mondeo TDCI LX wagon great car we're pretty happy with it.

I read in the owners manual that timing belt is due by 200,000ks, its just clicking over 177,000 so its getting close to needing to be done in the next year.
I'd usually change a timing belt myself but being a newer car i want to be sure its done right, has anyone got access to a manual, or a link to a "how-to" on doing the timing belt on once of these TDCI engines?
had a bit of a search online and its a tad harder to find info on these Euro fords in comparison to my falcon which is understandable

any help much appreciated

I'm planning to do mine as well, but no due for a year or so. There are a few sources of info, Haynes, the one I linked to, and a couple of Ford ones.

It would be a good topic for a DIY how to.

It may be an idea to change the water pump while you're at it?

Transmission fluid change is at 180000km - an absolute must. DIY is on this forum.

Looks like one difficulty could be getting the crankshaft bolt out.
Next is keeping the timing, then not damaging position sensors.
Clamp the flywheel well and nicely to get the bolt out.
That means a special tool and a long lever, not an impact wrench, as is warned against in the manual.
Then it might be a 'challenge' to get the new belt on.

Ahh k sweet cheers mate, ill look into them links when i get home.
Found a video on youtube of a bloke doing the timing belt on a dw10 in another model "Peugeot" or something similar and he takes the starter motor out and inserts a specific size drill bit into a hole specifically for doing the timing belt. Not sure if it would be the same or similar on our engines. Ill have a look for the link for that when im home

that's what i thought the intake designs looks little bit different but would be the same internally

Thanks heaps mate, I plan on doing the water pump also hopefully with them proper locking tools will make the job fairly easy but like you said not damaging the position sensors hope there not too tricky, hope its easier then it sounds, nothing like changing timing belts on old toyotas

yes ill have to get onto doing the transmission also, do they have filters like a traditional auto? seems to go great so far but really need to keep on top of servicing cant afford to have issues with it

I find from experience so far that if you dive in it's not as scary as it sounds.

Yes the tranny has a filter and it is vital to change it. The fluid change is more important on these boxes, I'd say because the clutches are running in it as well. 60,000km is the schedule, I'd say stick to it. FUCHS make a cheaper fluid (Titan DCTF).

Yeah i seem to find that with alot of jobs on the my bf, everyone was sayin how hard it is to drop the diff cradle out but me and a mate had it out in a couple hours swapped the diff and had it back in and going again a few hours later.
Always wondering what could go wrong gets you paranoid of failing tho i guess.

Ill have to look for that article on changing the transmission oil on the mondeo and get onto it soon i think. Its runnng pretty well at the moment, I've heard some bad things about the powershift people not liking the way they shift etc but i like it, changes quicker then my zf in the bf

As I've mentioned elsewhere it's maybe a good idea to make up a tube with an elbow to avoid the tedious double removal of airbox.
Also there are probably easier ways to jack and get the car level. One way might be to go up and down as required but that's maybe not so certain to get the level right. Dunno.

Thanks heaps mate. Sounds easy enough ill be onto doing that in the coming weeks hopefully all goes smoothly for me ill be sure to let you know how i go.

So I'd imagine i need the forscan app thru a Bluetooth obd2 adapter to check transmission fluid temp? I have a cheapish one but ill buy a better one if its needed.
Or will just running the motor till at operating temp be sufficient enough do you think?

Transmission temp is 45C in Ford manual I think so 35-45 should be fine.
I can't see why you shouldn't just get it so it feels warm to the touch, otherwise Forscan is needed for temp, I've used a cheap unmodified elm327 adapter, as well as OBDLink MX. Generic OBD doesn't usually show trans temp.

Although not necessary consider measuring all fluid going in and out. I tried last time but stuffed up.

cheers mate, i just got the forscan app then and had a play mines an elm327 also and works great shows the trans temp and alot of other handy info, seems alot better then the torque pro app & it actually works properly lol just cant figure out how to add more gauges etc once i've initially set it up, works alright on the xr6t also.. another transmission i need to service but ill get to that later i suppose..

Rang ford and about $40 for the filter kit and was something like $46 per litre of the oil he said, he seemed to think id need 7l, about to ring around local shops for the fuchs oil hopefully i can get that cheaper then that.

a local auto barn couldn't get me fuchs dtcf but they have a penrite oil for $70 per 4l not sure if i want to run the penrite tho
bursons can get the fuchs dctf for $99.50

In 2013 the filter kit was $102.65 at Ford.

Titan DCTF from Burson's $341.99/20 liters

Bockmans also had FUCHS $90 4 liters

Yeah, I'd go for the Fuchs oil. Nothing against Penrite but the Fuchs is from Germany.

If the fluid level is OK beforehand you should only need 6 liters. On the other hand if it is a bit low may need seven. When doing the 2nd half of the procedure add in lots of 250ml, and give it a moment for the overflow. If it seems a lot going in, don't worry, it will overflow to the correct level.

From what you're saying and the how to & the video it seems fairly straight forward.
I just need to figure out best way to get it level. Probably just leave it on the jack and lowwer it to road height with the wheel under the car and keep an eye on it. My garage seems pretty level so hopefully that will do.
I could borrow a spirit level off my mate just not sure what i could go off

Check the floor's reasonably level and make a wood/wire/cardboard whatever gauge to lower the car to correct sill height for the fluid level check?

I used a small round bubble level fixed with blu-tack to read level with the car on a known level surface and had the whole car jacked and propped. I guess if you're going to level the car you may as well do it properly, but it's a matter of degree I suppose.

I had a look yesterday and it looks like you could fill the box via a funnel, half inch PVC tube and 13mm irrigation elbow, leaving airbox in place. Haven't tried it. Tube will go on elbow with hot water, have tried that though.

sounds like the go may have call my mate in who's a qualified builder to help me get her level want it to be right last thing i need is issues with the powershift lol

Look forward to hearing how you went, and any extra ideas for the DIY. It really is a simple job, just unfamiliar maybe. You are looking at fluid levels in two directions, between the clutch and mechatronics (front to rear) and another side to side for overall level, as I see it.

If you have ever gone up or down a very steep driveway
you might find the gbox can't cope (as I did).

Yeah a couple of times its been a little weird on a hill but overall my experience with the powershift has been great. Its awesome zipping thru brisbane traffic.
I've got all the fluid and everything i need ready to go so might get to doing it this weekend or early next week.

Just finished servicing the powershift. Found it fairly easy going by your write up and the volvo video! Shes all done and running really well.
Your write ups pretty much bang on. I did use close to 7l making sure the level was right i put in an extra 500ml or so just to be sure and let it run down to the right level.
The Fuchs part number seemed to be wrong when i was talking to bursons but they still sorted me out with the correct fluid.
Not sure if our airbox is different but it just clipped in via rubber bung type things so was quite easy to remove and reinstall once the intake clamp and sensor was un plugged.
Overall a fairly easy transmission to service id say anyone could do it following your instruction as long as they get the car nice and level.

Will be onto changing fuel filter and then timing belt in the not to distant future i think the timing belt will be fun lol

Good to hear it.

After a few goes at the fuel filter I settled on using a hand operated vacuum pump like the mityvac. I plan to do an updated DIY on that.

Great work!

How did you end up getting the vehicle level? Did you end up just jacking the passenger front wheel off the ground, remove wheel, and lower back to ground level?

And, from your experience how long after a drive did you wait to have the gearbox temp correct.
