Arrow $1.42 a litre in Melb's south suburbs!!!! $1.52 for 98 octane!!!!

Just got an sms from the missus sayin she just saw this record price for fuel.

That puts an even bigger hole in my pocket as I cant use regular premium or unleaded due to my tune.

Damn!!

Whats it like in your neck of the woods??

To think that the more fuel goes up, the more exise the government collects.........

We are basically being held at ransom by a government who isnt interested in how low wage earners live, but by how many ppl he can screw over for as long as it takes before someone (a motoring body) decides to stand up and do something about the 50 cents + a litre going straight into little Johhny's pocket.

$70 a barrel for oil dosent warrant $1.43 at the bowser.

Remember when Howard 'promised' that GST would never be put on fuel?

10 cents a litre ontop of the 50 cents of government tax is absurd.

I will not be voting for John Howard next election, he has broken way too many promises.

*sigh* didn't take long to get into a political commentary.
:

Tax on an excise is old news, get over it. Have you written to your local member of parliment? both Labour and Liberal parties? What have you done about it to justify making a complaint. Apart from your compulsory voting a few years ago, have you done anything else for your democratic right to bag out John Howard or Australian Government Policy?

No?

Then keep paying your 50+ cents per litre in excise.

Look im not going to comment on your voting preference. But just ask that you consider the following:

The following graph represents the futures derivative price for the delivery of one barrel of light sweet crude - as traded on the new york mercantile exchange.

Now - the data i have isnt perfect (lol, bear with me) - so just look at the NYMEX price from march onwards - as this lines up the data in the next graph.

The following graph represents the pump price of unleaded petrol (taken from WA's fuel watch site - but within a few c/L is representative of what we are all paying - with the exception of QLD):

Notice anything? I think it's fair to say they are following a VERY similar trend. Now i dont have the time (or the wish) to demonstrate the correlation between these two - but i'd wager that it's close to 80% or 90%.

An interesting point to note was what happened in australia over the easter weekend. The oil companies actually HELD OFF on increasing the wholesale price - despite the fact they were paying more at the singapore index price - in order to reduce the consumer backlash that $1.40/L prices over easter would have resulted in. But i digress...

Paying $1.40/L for fuel - despite what some seem to believe - is not the work of the prime minister of australia. This isnt even a political issue - i cant understand why lib vs ALP was brought up???

This is basic supply and demand economics. OK - so there's nothing simple about the price of oil - but the basic underlying volatility is simple supply and demand.

The call appears to be "drop the GST on fuel". Correct?

Dont you think that's just a little short sighted? OK, so we drop the GST and fuel comes down to $1.26/L. Oil climbs to $80/bbl.... pump price climbs to $1.40/L again. We're back to square one but with billions missing from the budget... great.

Maybe we can rape some more money from your pay packet to cover it?
Or close a few hospitals?
Or stop paying off foreign debt?

ALL so that YOU can get a PRECIOUS RESOURCE at a price which SUITS YOU?

We are to blame. Each and every one of us. PARTICULARLY those of us who think we have the RIGHT to drive cars with MUCH WORSE fuel consumption than possible alternatives. It was all good for the west to develop an addiction to large cars until china and india finally hit heavy industrialisation wasnt it? Oh - now another 1+ billion mouths to feed from the same oil wells. But FFS they have just as much right to the oil as anyone else.

You want to point fingers then look a little closer to home because you wont find the answer on either side of parliament house.

The construction of a car will consume TWICE its weight in fossil fuels like oil. The computer in front of you consumed 10 TIMES ITS WEIGHT IN OIL during its production.

OK so i sound a little angry - but please rest assured it is not directed at any individual on this site. I just get so frustrated with people blaming every aspect of their life on the government - petrol prices being the worst offender of them all.

How much are you willing to sacrifice in order to get something as PETTY as cheap petrol??????

From a friend of mine in Germany... they're paying for regular (95 RON there) - $2.48 AU/litre.

God I hope we never get to that stage. We'll all be driving 1.0 4cyl diesels like they do...

Since GST was introduced I have written to local parties about "misleading the voters into believing that GST would never be introduced on fuel" & where, why and how fuel exise is collected.

If I had the policical knowledge and position, I'd be rattling the goverments cage until someone took notice.

Didn't take long for a Pro Howard voting, cardigan wearing, mummy breast fed me till 14 years of age tool to back up a government who has continuously mislead voters into a majority in the upper house of parliament.

well first to sling the mud aren't we.

PS i'm not a liberal voter, i'm not a howard apologist, so don't assume things you don't know.

I'm impressed that you wrote to your local members of parliament. Do you realise how many people don't know that they can, and that they are entitled to a personalised response?

So what was your response from the MP's?

I managed to fill up on the way home from TAFE at 119.5 (at Mobil, after the 4cpl discount), but many of the other servos were up to 139.9

That's just for 91RON.

Petrol getting expensive is a nightmare..it is not only petrol prices that go up .. other things prices will go up as well..for example we might buy milk more expensive..transportation costs..companies will put their prices up because of the cost of petrol..Wait and watch..it is just a nightmare..Here in Australia petrol is still kind of cheap..I am actually from Turkey..Over there now it is 3 $ a litre..
Also politics..USA bombing Iran..I dont want to imagine the petrol prices then..

I can't imagine why people would not know that they can write into local MP's.

When the Seaford Pier was going to be demolished, I wrote in.

When the Scoresby Fwy was announced to be tolled, I wrote in.

The local MP at the time was fell of deaf ears when I wrote in about GST and fuel.

Had you not assumed that I whinged before acting, the mud would not have been thrown.

Around my Area (Aspley/Virginia, Qld)

fuel was:

91 - 128.8
95 - 134.8
98 - 138.8

Last night was only 13 cents per litre cheaper.

Happy for it to be my bad, I didn't attempt to insult you though. Just pointed out your misguided angst. Plenty of regular Australians don't know that they can make official comments directed at their MP's that they are obliged to respond.

Yeah and then they will keep going up they are never going to lift the fuel excise and oil prices are never going to go down again. The risisng cost of fuel will push everything up, anything that requires transport and if this continues to happen combined with record high mortages this country and many others will be in a recession in 5 to 10 years.
