8" sub in AU parcel shelf

Asked this question already in the audio section, but nobody seems to go in there.....so.....

If I were to fit an 8" sub to my rear parcel shelf in my AU, do I need to open up the fabric and fit a speaker grille (as in Premium Sound vehicles), or can I just leave it 'hidden' under the shelf?

Will it have any impact on sound quality from the sub???

Obviously it won't have quite the same punch as a boxed one, but I still need my boot!

normally subs have to travel through rear seats to create their doof doof, i cant see some thin parcel shelf carpet holding it back

This is true. The doof doof shall not be hindered by mere parcel shelf carpet. Doof doof is all powerful.

lol at my stupid comments on doof doof, i have been awake for about 23 hours so far.

me personally i have my bass turned down slightly and my treble turned up by about +2 with my premium sound. bass gets very annoying after a while

The other thing you might want to consider is when you mount it on the back parcel shelf is the vibration from the speaker. It will rattle. I mounted 6 X 9's and that was bad enough. A sub would be worse.

eh? I have an 8" in mine (factory premium sub) running off an aftermarket amp and I have no rattle issues.

the locking mechanism in the centre seat belt retractor rattles in mine. i upgraded to a free air pioneer 8", much better than factory, but the amp needs a bit more grunt to get the most out of it.
to be honest, my standard system in my XR8 sounds much better than my premium one in the TS

When I put 6 X 9's amplified by a 300 watt amp in my XR I had heaps of rattles coming from the parcel shelf. I fixed the rattles by putting carpet underlay between the shelf and the plastic dressing. I can only imagin what rattles a sub mounted on the shelf would do. I have a pioneer sub in a box in the back and the only rattles I can hear is when I am out of the car and I can hear the boot rattleing. Can't hear it from inside though. My sound system is about 10 X better than the standard system. Pioneer head, alpine 6 inch R type splits in the front and 6 X 9 R type 3 way speakers in the rear, alpine 300 watt amp and a pioneer 12 inch sub in a box. The amp is driving the front splits and the sub.

ya cant fix all rattles, i have 2x1500w 12's, each with 3" of excursion and they are loud, even with the amps on the bare minimum.lol.when i had the premo sound in with the 8" it sounded pretty good, i just wanted more noise...

just a follow up on this.....getting sound stuff installed outside my work

the bloke is going to try it under the carpet, but reckons the carpet may still be enough to block the sound.....the sub is around 140w RMS being powered by a bridged 2 channel amp producing up to 360w RMS......what do you guys think? Will the sound get through?

I have tried this with a friends EF Fairmont. We put an old Jaycar 8" under the stock shelf. We used the small brackets Jaycar sell for their speaker grills to secure it down, which were just thick enough to stop the shelf carpet from touching the sub. It sounded fairly decent compared to no sub at all.

Agreed. You would notice the difference of a sub that *might* (and a big might there..) be a little held back with some carpet, compared to no sub at all.

Update............everything got fitted today, the guy ended up cutting a small hole in the parcel shelf, and then made up a sort of grill/speaker cover that is held down over the top with velcro strips, but there is now a gap for the sound to get through - no more blockage - all is well!!!

Unfortunately one of the amplifiers I had turned out to be no good (dodgy ebay purchase - already filed a claim), but that's another story.....

I'll put up some photos soon in my build thread....

try a narrow 8 or 10" that pioneers makes ,as for the bass that comes out, its better than none at all

Got myself an old-school 8" phoenix gold sub - terrific brand renowned for its quality.
In great condition - works very well! And it only cost me $25!!!

Nice work, but I can better that! :P I just picked up a Jaycar Response 8" sub with dual magnets, for FREE!

I'm interested to see what you did with your shelf, and how it looks. I was just going to drop the carpet back on top of the sub myself, but could do a speaker grill if it looks ok.

Well, Here we go with my first post on AFF...

I have a 01 AUIII Forte sedan on gas, i have changed out the headunit but am still using stock everything else.
I noticed the hole for the sub in the parcel shelf... Would and could i get a sub to fit in there with the Gas tank in the way?

Apologies for reviving this old thread from the dead...

I love the idea of the seat mounted Sub. only problem, my "povo" pack doesn't have a middle fold down are rest... i wonder if i can get the same sort of idea happening with an open air sub and some holes on the back of the seat... hmmm... things to ponder....

The best value free air sub to use in the falcons after a lot of research i have concluded to be the kenwood. The jbl and jl audio are also great but in terms of price and not being shallow mount for those running gas the kenwood works out the best value.
Sounds great, cost effective and can be mounted in cars with gas tanks in the boot.
