If it was an auto, the gearbox turret is larger and a Sierra 5 speed will fit, so I've read. Was looking at doing a panel van.

What 5 speed would go with a Mazda 13B Rotary? How hard would it be to fit?

Sierra as in Ford Sierra (little pocket rocket from the UK, they ran Cosworth 600hp versions at Bathurst, made V8 Commodore fans cry, there are standard versions too though), not the Suzuki 4wd thing. From what i read, they use adaptors, or modified bell housing to bolt to the Escort motor. If youve got one available, I dont see why you couldnt get a Sierra motor in though.

i never actually did it, so youll need to check facts, its just what I read when I entertained the idea of doing an Escort panel van.

Out of all the conversions, the rotary is probably the easiest, they are tiny to look at, and carb fed. It would just be getting it done.

I would suggest a celica gearbox, with conversion kit. That'd be the way I'd go. Im pretty sure Castlemaine does a conversion kit.

Yes, you are correct, that'd be the most hassle free way. But if you were using a 2 litre Pinto or something, I think a Celica gearbox would be a very good choice. I have a contact who specialises in making custom conversion kits to fit a celica or supra gearbox to virtually any engine.

A sierra 5 speed (out of standard 2 ltr - not twin cam) will pretty much bolt straight up to any mk3 - mk5 cortina engine, hope this helps

This is just my opinion but I think the celica gearbox has the worst ratios!!! I would go the sierra 5 speed. A lot cheaper and easier to do and i think has much better ratio's.

Just my thoughts.

Cheers,

Sierra Type 9 Box. Same ratio's as a Escort 2L box, but with an over driven 5th. 100kph is aroung 2900 revs. Will bolt staight up to a 2Lt Pinto, however an Auto tunnel needs to be put in or just do what I did. A few well places hits with a mallet. $500 2ndhand or about $1000 reco.

Couldn't agree more. It's the way to go. A lot easier & cheaper than a supra box, assuming your bolting it to a pinto.

Good luck finding a w58 box then good luck with the price.

Also with the Sierra 5spd you need to fabricate new mounts for the g/box crossmember and make a new hole for the shifter a little further back.

When I took my car (2ltr 4spd manual) for it's first 100km/hr run I thought I might need to look at a 5 speed when the rpms sat around 4100. After new spark plugs and timing it now sits about 3000rpm, pretty impressed.

A 5 speed would have to cut that down a fair bit in fifth now for me to be interested again I think.

Huh? New plugs etc shouldn't change the cars gearing. Maybe the tacho is working properly.

Probably, doesn't sound like it's running as fast/loud/(working as hard to get) on 100km/hr though

go the ford sierra 5spd its cheap it'll bolt up to any ford engine with its standard bell housing from anglia engine, escort engines, cortina engines and even a 97 ford mondeo zetec twin cam, and you dont have to cut up the body apart from the gear lever hole and drill some mounting hole in the floor use a hillman hunter drive shaft and the sierra speedo cable, and you can buy a standard clutch to fit in its all really easy

escortzetec, did you fit your sierra 5 speed to a coupe or a sedan? the hillman hunter driveshaft fitting sounds good, but i dont wanna go chasing down a driveshaft then finding out it is too short. is the hillman hunter the one with the 1725cc engine?

Most Hillman Hunters have the 1725 engine, but the 1600 version shares the same block. They look a bit like Mk2 Cortinas. If you look in the right place you can probably get a driveshaft (if not a whole car) for free - get in touch with the Hillman Owners Club if you decide to go down that route
