Any image editing program will be able to reduce the size of photos down to a suitable level. JPEG or GIF files are the best choice for their compression.

Cheers

if they are photos then use either jpg or png
if they are blocks of colour then use gif
a gif only has 256 colours, whereas jpg or png have 16.7 million colours, you will find optimising packages around, you need to be able to both resize and optimise, personally I use png where at all possible for pictures as it has the colour resolution of jpg but not "lossy", but has the compression algorithm similar to the one used on gifs

Or you can download easythumbs which lets you resize images in bulk, just point it to your directory of pics, tell it were to save the resized pics, tell it waht size you want the pics and it will resize them all for you.
