Default Opinions on Dual Clutch auto boxes

After others thoughts and experiences with dual clutch auto boxes.
I currently drive a car with one and find it awful in stop start driving. Shuddering, roughness and an overall feeling that the gearbox is weak.
Looking at buying a late model medium sized sedan for the mrs and struggling to find something that is turbo and doesn't have a DSG type box.
Dual clutch boxes seem to be very popular with one of their upsides being better fuel economy which yes I've found is the case but the roughness as I've described above makes them something I'd probably rather avoid.

Anyone else have similar experiences with them?

Focus on the range of marques fitted with the 8HP box by ZF. It’s an hydraulic converter box, in other words a conventional automatic.

2015 Ford Focus on went back to a traditional torque convertor auto and is a great improvement over the earlier DPS6 dual clutch fitted Focus'.

The newer SA Focus is also an amazing vehicle. Do yourself a favor and have a test drive in one!

Yeah I dont rate them. Shift times might be good but thats about it, everything else is a negative IMO.

Own out of warranty at your own peril.

Since the adoption of Mid gear converter lock up, the fuel efficiency claims of DSG boxes
have receeded, they are cheaper to make but come with trade off the genuine auto buyers
don't like. European buyers come from a market full of manual transmissions, so for them,
a DSG having some manual trans traits is not unacceptable.

Many of the remaining sedans/hatches seem to have gone either dual clutch or cvt. As polyal said, out of warranty both are a huge liability in the event of mechanical failure.

If i was looking in that market, Id be looking at a mazda 3 as they have a conventional torque converter auto. Only issue is theyve attempted to go upmarket and ditched the entry level models.

I dont mind the focus, but the designers have embraced a smaller, low blow turbo engine. Im sure it drives well, but not for me, thanks.

Get a Camry hybrid.

Although, I drove one for a bit and was a little disappointed with the drivetrain refinement. Random thumps and clunks when going from electric to petrol mode. My BA is smoother.
The regular Camry drivetrain is more refined.

Leave DSG for exotic cars, us working class scumbags should stick to torque converter slushboxes.

VW Transporter in Vic Pol fleet with DSG, hopefully the accountant who was responsible for that 'cost saving' measure has been put out to pasture.

Went for a lap in my cousins new BMW M4 which has the dual clutch. For a car that doesnt make crazy power the speed of the shifts was unreal and made it feel supercar fast. Have no idea on what its like to live with as a daily though.

Tasks like reverse parallel parking on a slight gradient, always test them.

While I hate DSG's and the main reason I didn't replace our T5 with a T6, I think VicPol wanted AWD crewvans and only VW offers it in mid-size vans in Australia.

Porsche PDK dual clutch are faultless imo. Super responsive, basically instant shifts, no shudder at low speeds etc.

I would go out of my way to NOT buy anything with a CVT or DCT.

I think Golf 8 goes back to normal torque converter?

DSG in work Renault massive van (Transit big size) absolute shocker in tight carparks, the way it does nothing nothing nothing then suddenly surges and you have to slam the brake. Nice upshift going forward.

I personally think that dual clutch autos have no place in anything other than a high performance car. And I hate CVT's with a passion.

Petrol MD Mondeo's had a regular 6 speed auto. Mondeo's are excellent highway cruisers. Because they were engineered for high-speed European highways, they hold the road really well.

Mazda 6's are also 6 speed autos and if you can deal with a CVT, check out the Subaru Liberty.

Loved the DCT trans in the MC mondeo.
Drove it like a manual without the clutch when not on the highway
Didn't love the servicing cost every 60,000 km, erased any savings in efficiency

Got nervious with repair/replacement costs of components in general in the MC at 190k+ km.
Actually downgraded to a more basic falcon with zf for highway hauling (2 roos in 2 years sealed its fate)

I'd buy again if i wasn't racking up higher then average annual kms.

The CVT's I've driven are like pedalling a large rubber band.

I would avoid a dual clutch in euro cars if possible, for example in Audi A4 A6 S5 up to 3 litre diesels seem to have them. If out of warranty, you need it fixed youre up for $10k + for pretty much any fix. I looked into getting a couple of year old A6 allroad, which are awesome cars, but was put off by the Dual clutch. A6s and SQ5's if you get the twin turbo 3.0 diesel instead of the single turbo have an 8 speed auto, which is what you want. Also same in the VW Touareg, they have the 8 speed auto with the 3.0 Diesel. If you want to tow a boat for example, out of the boat ramp all that slipping and revving of a dual clutch wouldnt be good. I ended up getting a Touareg 8 speed normal auto, and its great.

I also have a dual clutch i30 Diesel, and its actually fun to drive as it bangs through the gears. That car doesnt matter as can has a massive warranty. Have had it 2.5 years and is always floored, sometimes does the odd funny noise or rev, but so much better than a normal auto in that car.

I could not stand to have a CVT .... Horid things.

Really rather a manual, but just arent that available for such things as Luxury SUVs etc

VW are fitting a conventional auto to the Golf in 2021 and only supplying as Dsg in high performance golfs. Skoda is also introducing a conventional auto in the Karoq. To my mind that suggests Even VW are recognizing that Dsg boxes are not suited for urban driving long term.

Conventional autos have made inroads into the economy gains of DSG's as well. Pretty much no reason to use DSG bar quicker shifting for performance cars.

I have 2 cars with DSG.
2018 golf with 6 speed and Kodiaq with 7 speed. Both wet clutchs.

I also had a 7 speed skoda octavia 2014. Dry clutch.

Never experienced the shuddering and rough take off. I do wait a second when i take my foot of the brake pedal before accelerating.

don't know how long they will last. Most likely I will trade in when 5 years warranty expires.

Our company has 11 year old Focus with DCT. Not one problem with the gearbox. Was shuddering on take off but this was a faulty engine mount. All good now, smooth all round. With DCT you should never hang on the transmission on a hill (slips the clutch), always use the brake.

My M3 build (E90) has the 7-speed Getrag DCT box. It's fantastic, one of the better aspects of the entire car.
If I could have had the same trans in my Falcon Turbo also, I would have been overjoyed.

I read an article about a specialist tuner that used the BMW M3 DCT (Getrag) box for retrofit into the 90s Toyota Supra, since the box with minor upgrades can handle up to 1000hp, and shifts very well.

Cheers,
