Big bang cheap fix.

So yesterday a large truck hit one of those little yellow humps in the middle of the road (we have them in SA) and hit it into my lane, i hit it at 100kmh

Tire was obliterated, shocker owned, spring...in 6 pieces and control arm rooted.

got it towed to my mechanic who sourced parts in a day and all up it costed 600 to fix.

Which sounds harsh. however i replaced 2 tyres (to keep the same tyres on the front, law in SA)

the tyres came to 480 all up.

the suspension cost a measly $120

Also the tyres are Nankangs and to be honest I'm VERY impressed with the tyres for cheapys the level of grip especially in the wet is astounding. I had Bridgestones on beforee and they were $320 a tyre and these Nankangs crap all over them.

Was raging when the accident happened was worse when i couldnt get the rego plate of the truck.

But Im extatic with the result

Do you mean those metal round things that look like a squashed lighthouse? For some reason they love putting those in the middle of intersections in country towns up here in QLD. Bloody unbelievable they are not illegal.

I'd contact your local road authority - if the thing was detached from the road, they are probably at least partly liable for the damage. It's worth a try!

well lucky that wasnt a little kid that fell off the back of the truck.. now off you go and do a defensive driving course.... until then leave a bigger gap between you and trucks that run over yellow things.....

Who told you that? There is no such law stipulating you need the same tyres on the front. The only stipulation is they are the same size and construction.

BTW. I work in the industry, so I am upto date with all that sort of information.

I am also glad you didn't have an accident as a result of hitting that solid block of concrete.

no car in QLD will pass a rwc if tyres are not matched pairs front and back,dont have to be same front to rear though just a matched pair.im fairly sure that is law in most states

i've missed something: you've descibed a silent cop (round yellow metal plate used at intersections)
or a yellow plastic lane divider with refectors??

but doing hwy speeds with a truck? possably on a duell lane.

That's just being picky. SVO supporter is on the money - tyres must be same size and construction (radial or cross ply, but not one of each). Pattern/tread depth (as long as legal) doesn't matter.

In Qld i think the fronts have to be the same pattern, but the rears can be different, not entirely shore though

The truck was on the other side of the road so tuck that one right up .......................

as for the tire thing its illegal if been defected for it before

if its one of these i believe the nick for them is silent policeman, used to deter people from cutting the corner.

Queensland law whereby tyre size, construction, and tread pattern must be the same on each axle but can differ front to rear, while draconian, makes sense - would YOU like to drive your Falcon in the wet with a Triangle tyre on one front corner and a Dunlop on the other? Didn't think so...

yer ey... and the percieved benefits of a driver training course are mostly not appreciated until one has completed one......

I have done several of these courses including Murcotts but frankly, they have little to do with the op's situation so I don't understand your point??

not everyone is as good a driver as you are...... and maybe those people could benefit from the 'crash avoidance' side of training...... develop skills you may not have and discover what your vehicle is capable of in an 'oh ****' moment.......

He was driving along a road, as you do.
And a truck went past in the opposite direction, as they do.
And the truck flicked something at him causing the accident!
What part of a driving training course would teach you to avoid a situation like that, It was more then likely a split second thing that superman could not avoid

All I can say about that is, you got suckered by a copper or Regency fella. I work in the tyre industry in S.A and there is no such thing as different tread patterns being illegal to fit on the same axle.

The rules state that the tyres must be of the same construction and size. Nothing about tread patterns.

So next time you get a smart alex copper or Regency fella, tell them to check the rules before issuing the defect for that.

If you ring Regency Park, they have information bulletins available that say the exact thing. Or you could visit the transport Dept website and read about it yourself. Whilst I don't have the particular website on hand, it'd be easily enough found. The information is under wheels and tyre modifications.
