Mondeo MC diesel Wagon

Hi,
Love the wagon,
The only issue is the turbo lag,
Do I go for a chip or retune?
I just want it smoother to drive,
I don't want more power or better fuel consumption, its good as is,
It would be even better if it was more tractable at low revs,
Anyone done this?

How long have you been driving it?
Can you be sure it is performing like the rest of them?

Owned an MC 2.2 ltr diesel wagon for three years (60,000 kms) and agree it is a great car. I also experienced some degree of turbo lag at start from standing say at traffic lights. After having three turbo diesels of different manufacturers (my wife has one also) I would say it is normal behaviour for such engines. Some new engines have a second electric turbo for exactly this reason.
That said, once the car is running (and turbo up to speed) there is no lag to be felt and the acceleration from the diesel engine is a pleasure.

Hi Guys,
I have had the wagon for 12 months now,
It has done 83k,
Its only on initial take off at low revs,
Or perhaps if you are at low revs coming out of a roundabout,
I'm sure a remap could smooth it out,
Stuart, I didn't know we had the 2.2 litre in Australia,
Was it an import?

If you are still under warranty, go to the dealership and make sure the PCM etc. are up to date with the latest software. If out of warranty they may charge you for this.
I agree though, the initial lag is certainly more than what I have experienced in my 3 previous VW Passat TDI's.

There are tunes available such as Bluefin and tuning boxes from various other manufacturers.

I had the Bluefin on my previous EcoBoost and it was amazing!

Haven't yet got it recalibrated to work on the TDCi.

Its no longer in warranty, but I still get ford to do the service,
They tell me it is hooked up to their computer and any firmware updates are part of the service,
I just want someone who has had the remap on a TDCI done and can confirm it improves the driveability.

Yeah, the lag on mine is noticeable when trying to pull away quickly. Spoils the fun a little when there's a Commodore next to me at the traffic lights!

Not sure that a remap would work, but please let us know if you find a solution..

I was on a company transfer to Germany for 3 years so I took the opportunity to purchase the 2.2 Ltr version after having an MA 2 Ltr TDCi sedan in Australia. Enjoyed driving on the autobahn on many holidays at 180+ km/hr using the space to just take whatever we wanted with us. It had the full winter kit with heated windscreen, mirrors and even air conditioned front seats for summer!

Have a look at a sprintbooster or windbooster module. It is throttle lag not turbo. Dads does the same and is looking at getting one

Its not just Turbo lag, especially the "at low revs coming out of a roundabout" bit. There's an element of the powershift that's responsible as well. So a chip or tune does help but it will still be there. I had a CRtech chip and it helped a bit but had other side effects like incorrect fuel economy figures and confused the transmission.

The roundabout thing (and getting back on the throttle from a very low speed) seems to be the transmission's insistence on staying in second, even if you are almost stopped but then it rides the hell out of the clutch when you get back on the throttle. I reckon you would actually get going a lot quicker if it let the clutch out quicker. It's a diesel ffs it's not going to stall.

I tend to agree with you, its the DSG not thinking quick enough,
Don't understand why they used this,
A conventional 6 speed auto would have been fine,
I have a 6 speed auto fg xr6 and its soooo good,
Smooth and quiet, cant even feel it change gear,
A friend has a late model golf petrol 1.4 litre turbo wagon,
It has a DSG and it too is so smooth, quiet and fuel efficient,
Maybe that's one thing VW got right!!!!

After a couple of weeks of Mondeo ownership I think I'll just accept the initial lag and enjoy the surge once it's moving. All told it drives very well.

If I'm coming up to a busy roundabout or a series of them I switch to manual mode so I have more control over the response. There are certain sections on the way to & from work I use manual all the time. Kind of fun too.

The MB with a conventional 6-speed auto is certainly a nicer drive in the city, but then the DSG is better when having fun.

We had a Golf with the 7-speed DSG as a rental last year, and that certainly worked well. But then I had a Passat rental some time ago, and that was not fun at all when parking or taking off uphill.
