JASON, can you give a bit more detail in the shifter operation please?
would i be correct in assuming it goes P N R D as a mechanical shift then up and down through from 1st to 4th electronically. if so i could probably adapt it to my project?? what is the cost of the shifter itself? do you have a pic of it upside down by any chance(too late now seeing its already fitted)

mine needs mechanical shift to replace say a 3 speed borg warner40 i found out so i doubt this would work

Yes it ratchet selects for P N R D, and from there it is electronic select for the other gears, I do have pics, I can email them to you, PM me your email address.

Install time was about 4 hours with making of brackets and small cut to the trans tunel, to trim around the BA shifter took me about 4 hours as well waiting for stuff to dry.

Yup is heaps of fun, I love it.

I have a brand new BA steering wheel for sale if you want it, only it hasn't got the horn pad, just the wheel by itself. You can have it for $20 if you want it.

would a BA wheel even fit in an older E series? the BA steering wheels have a smaller diameter, much more sporty imho.

i don't mind the truck steering wheel, its a lot more sensitivity when it comes to steering, but then again the ba is nice and direct. i probably prefer parking with the eb and driving with the ba

My wheel is tiny, tis awesome for driving (or even better for spirited driving) but can feel really heavy parking etc, and a bit harder to reverse with... (because of the angle and all since I dont trust my mirrors for reversing)

That shifter looks great mate. What changes did you have to make for connection to the linkage/gearbox?

I've got a 1992 EBII Fairmont Ghia that would really look choice with that mod

The BA shifter uses a cable not rods and linkages.
cable routes via a slit/hole in the steering wheel base plate (just big enough 10mm hole I think), then through a custom bracket (still have to make a real one), and then mounts the the gearbox using the standard gear box select, I uses a small bolt as a post through the first hole below the big round one used in the standard rod/linkage setup. An electronics module is then added to talk to the trans computer and tell it what to do when you put it in SS mode.

All in all its a fairly simple straight forward mod.

Like Dellboy said, it's fairly easy to get working. Mine still isn't cosmetically complete due to laziness, and I'm living without Park for now, until I get around to fiddling with the bracket and/or linkage arm once more. It's been like that for months now, haha!

Dellboy was far more professional with his one, not stopping until he'd finished.

Making the holes isn't a big task, removing the centre console is quite simple (a few screws and the whole thing comes out), and removing the old housing is easy, apart from the damn circlip underneath! The electronics are even easier than fitting the housing & cable.

I still have that report to do (as mentioned in the thread in my sig) and *will* do it once I have the cosmetics & the bracket both 100%.

I strongly suggest this as an alternative to a T5

It's a hell of a lot better than an ordinary T-bar... I also get the awesome induction noise when backing off while high in the rev range when holding a gear

Where do you get the electronics to talk to the TCM from the shifterr? Or did you guys make up something? I noticed Dellboy made his own shift display using 2 x PIC chips does this also control the shifter?

It looks unreal by the way....excellent job.

I have will be integrating the display into my dash fully, GHIA5L actually has put his in the spare hole next to the rear demister switch in his car.

The electronics is a bigger box that fits neatly under the centre console towards the front (well i put mine there) and was programmed and built by a called Murray from the forums, send me a PM of you would like to be put in touch.

I'm quite surprised that no-one else really (to my knowledge) has taken this up as a mod for their E-Series, it's simply awesome. Dellboy and Murray are great guys to talk to too, if anyone is interested I urge you talk to Dellboy!

i'm seriously considering it, but my fabrication skills leave something (read: a lot) to be desired (in regards to the bracket).

dave, if you are travelling at about 30-40km/h in SSS mode with second engaged, does it kick bad to 1st? i HATE kickbacks!

plus i really, really like the idea of a 3rd pedal!

hey i like your modifications. i have an eb fairmont ghia and would like to make my headlights like yours. How did u do it? im guessing you just took your original head light appart and inserted the ba xt head light internals. Am i correct or is there more to it than that.Could you also tell me how u did the blue dash lights. ive seen the glodes in the dash and was wondering if you used blue rubbers over your globes or did you use LED's. i would apprciate if you would fill me in on those two queries as i would like to do them to my car right away. thanks mate

I would guess not only for the fact that the actual gearbox selector is always in Drive, just the solenoids in the gearbox are told to go into a different gear, so unless the AU fairmont shows 1st, 2nd, 3rd progression through gears when taking off from the lights.

But yes the shifter is possible to go into any 4 speed auto car.

I ordered my BA shifter from FTG AutoSalvage today. Price for complete mechanism from shift lever to cable (including facia etc) was $150, plus $15 postage. About 1/2 the price of a new one from Ford. I will fit it to my AU wagon, but initially only the PRND will work until I get the electrics to go with it.

Awesome, going into an AU can hardly wait for the results in fitting it, yeah i drove around PRND for about 3 weeks till we got the electronics finished and fitted

Can't wait to see the end result, and I really hope my doco helps! I'm interested to know how your shift kit will behave with the shifter in SSS, as mine is more aggressive in SSS compared to Drive (and it's a very mild shift kit).

Pully, sorry mate I missed your post from ages ago... It'll hold 2nd, but it would most likely kick back if you were travelling uphill.

Moran, I somehow doubt the electronics secrets will be shared :P Well, maybe the hardware side of things (you'd be able to duplicate the circuitry easily enough), but methinks the software will remain a secret with Murray ;)

The BA electronics are as difficult (or should I say as easy) to install as the S5 electronic shift kits. It's almost plug n play
