I dont see what the big deal is. P-Plates let other drivers know you havent been driving for as long as others and you have speed restrictions placed on you (here is SA at least). In all the time I was on my P's I was pulled over once, and that was for a valid reason (I didnt actually know at the time but I had jumped behind the wheel of an unregistered car). I am not saying that p-platere never get picked on, but from my experience it is not hard to avoid the cops attention. Maybe this is different in other states though.

It really isnt a big deal to throw up some p-plates anyway.

Actually, I've seen P platers up here using P plates. So, yeah.

I agree with Trouty, there should be an Australian Standard in driving laws across the country. That way, it makes it easier to police, and people won't get confused to what driving laws there are for different states.

Or caps just above the arm rest line with any car that has P plates - well, just about any. Most P platers I see have their seat back wound so far back that they are just about lying down while driving. I know it's a generalisation, but have a look next time you are driving around, and see how many young people (whether or not they are displaying P plates) have the drivers seat wound down as far as it will go. These drivers are the most dangerous on the road, because they normally drive like dickheads, and the moment they get into trouble, they are in no position to correct their cars.

i dont see how a plate is going to save any lives, if these people are so incompetent they shouldn't have passed their license test. i still see many non p platers that are hopeless drivers anyway. maybe we should all have a grading plate that shows our skill level?LOL

i didn't see any problems in QLD, other than tourists like myself wondering which lane goes where(reading maps etc) i don't see very many P platers being hoons really either.
i'm supprised that S.A has a 100km/h sped limit for P platers,it would be a pain for other motorists in a 110km/h zone seems a bit of a hazard to me.

Yeah. Heck, I do 115 on the Bruce Highway up here and notice that others still come flying past me. If there was a speed restriction for P platers here, and guys doing 120-130, that's a hazard.

I recently got my XR6T, as im in victoria i should not beable to drive it...But the other day i got pulled over and got the going over like shane3 did, all the same questions.

But then he noticed it was an XR6T and said they couldnt do anything because its a 6, didnt even mention anything about the power to weight ratio...

Guess i was lucky

Oh and that was the first time i have ever got pulled over on my "P's", even though i used to drive a more powerfull ute before getting this one. Just dont be a d***head and you wont get pulled over.

When I see a car with P plates I immediately know that:

a) Inexperienced driver
b) Expect erratic behaviour
c) I should give this car a Wide Berth
d) All of the above and then some.

Don't know what other states are like, but here in NSW, P sould be replaced by D. D for D!ckhead.

Pretty much right in your point form , but the last statement I can't agree , as there are youngins out there with brains. Not fair to cane them just because they're young and P platers. You and I were there once too you know .

Hmmm... I don't agree (it's ok, we're allowed to disagree, it doesn't mean I think you are wrong)

And yes some you should give a wide berth to, but for example the other day at the NSW FF meet I followed Brent - a P plater - and I thought he drove very well. I did not consider him to need a wide berth at all!

He has made a friend in me, for being intelligent, nice, kind, and not a d*ckhead doofer boy.

Not all P Platers are idiots, but it does identify someone who hasn't been driving for long, which means if they make a mistake for example, I wouldn't find myself getting as irritated as I would if someone without P's does it. P platers are generally inexperienced drivers, and I think that it adds to the understanding and courtesy to them while they learn how to drive...

lol on a side note - did anyone else miss the point on the first post?

i trust my girlfriend P plater so much that i would have paid for the the cars repair had there been a problem. i hired the car i am 32 years old and probably no better driver than her(i am a fairly considerate and patient driver, but still a bit of a hoon), it was the kindest a rental car had been driven i reckon(when she drove it)

well im on my p's and back in december we had that west roads thing in town and i was takin my lil bro and sis to school (i goto boarding school had the week off) in my ute(xg) and this pig i had been talkin to him all week and he pulled me over and charged me with speeding, cumin in from a hudred zone to a 50 was bout 40m in doin 70 overloaded car and no p's (my back one was displayed on the back window) all up was loss of licence and 500+ fine

P plates or not I don't think there is a single one of us here that can say we have not had the occasional mishap that has been compensated for by a thrid party. (for example) not seeing some one in a blind spot and the person in your blind spot was the one able to compensate for your mistake.

I think this is where a learning curve comes in, not just being a good driver yourself, but being a good enough driver to compensate others mistakes.

I guess what I am saying is none of us is the perfect driver, but P platers do lack this practical experience. If a P plate is displayed maybe even if only a few of us agree you may be more willing to overlook a mistake made by taking mental note they are less experienced.

(hell in some cases it may even eleviate road rage for a silly mistake)

and L platers have to display their l's but not their P's (which maybe changing soon)

and we can drive aT the same speed as the rest of the traffic,thankgod

i hate it when ya drive into sydney at 100 only tofind a l plater doing 80kmh on the hwy its scary and should be made to drive to the speed limit i reckon..

I don't know how they come up with stupid rules like that. Its harder and more dangerous to drive at 80 in a 100 zone than doing 100 because of traffic.

We all know that everyone immediately thinks (or screams!) "BLUDY P-PLATERS!!!! LEARN TO DRIVE!!!

Hence, why you only remember the fully-sik seat-fully-back & cap-pointing-at-the-sky or teh stupid girls in Xcels swerving everywhere or the other numerous P-plater stereotypes.

What you fail to notice is the hundreds of P-platers you come across during the day that drive normally and safely.

My point: why dont the shit drivers just get pulled over for driving crap, instead of everyone getting pulled over for being born close to the same year as those other young drivers makin us look bad.

When I was 16, just before I went on my P's (1993) I went in a demolition derby at the speedway in Darwin. I gotta say, that thing made my right foot one hell of a lot lighter than it otherwise would be, just purely because I could understand just how much an impact with anything at speed, be it a tree, another car or whatever, would feel like...ie pain. We barely topped 40 kph on the clay, and with 2 belts holding you in, head on into another car doing a similar speed, I gotta say, it bloody hurts. If I could change the licensing rules, id make a ride on one of those NCAP crash sleds compulsory (obviously not flat out) for all new P platers, just to show them what its potentially like. And maybe a couple of days riding in an ambulance too just for good measure. Might I add, I wore my P plate for about a month, got the shits with having to put it up all the time cos it was my oldies car, and just left em in the glove box. No-one was killed or injured cos of that. I say bugger em off, there almost useless. But then again, if they make more P plates, there'll be less plastic POS excels etc on the road... Only so much plastic in the world hey.
