The Mazda 6's run 2 separate mufflers on opposite sides of the car at the back, but surely a full twin system would be overkill on a 2.3L 4cyl. They must run a single to the rear axle or something, seems like a lot of extra expense for very little gain, doesn't even look that good.

My 302 XA has alot less than 200kw but it has a dual exhaust which I think looks awesome and sounds awesome so as far as I'm concerned you are dead wrong. As far as wussy four cylinder jappas go, I agree, the dual exhaust is kinda silly. Also I hate those pansy little Focus's with 4 exhaust tips.

Now if you want a real exhaust system, take notes...

I'm pretty sure I am correct but I think the reason they do it is to asertain maxium exhaust flow/power and to remain quiet. You can only flow so much out of a quiet single system.

Noise regulations are getting tighter too. So the manufactures have to get creative.

/me thinks its sad that Twin System (tm) on a late model car is usually a little Rice-Box (tm) and most of the big V8 cars "only" have one single outlet on one side.

Long live the '70s (tm)!

The new Liberties and Outbacks have them, both 4 cylinder and 6. Single system that splits into two with a muffler on each side. Means they can run big mufflers in the rear and only have a small one under the car, which is very practical. Plus it looks much more balanced at the back.

agreed Phycho chicken.

350Z
Maxima with the VG V6 runs the same system but single into twin after the rear wheels they are 180KW stock and give a Ba a very good run for their money STOCK.

both accord EURO and 'SEPPO versions in V6' run the twin system, euro has 140kw from a stock 2.4L 4 cyl thats more than a 3.9L EA had and almost what the EB had in a much ligher vehicle which has one of THE best chassies comming out of japan in a car that supprisingly seats 5 comfortably.

Mazda 6. Would you pick on an MPS?? i think not unless you had an XRT or something simmilar, even the stock 2.4L will do the qtr in 16.2/16.0 they arnt a slouch for a 4 cyl and twin pipes make for a balanced look at the rear.

Liberty's on the base 2.0L they dont 2.5 GT and 3.0L they do, once again nice balanced look and GT and 3.0L have balls...

i still dont understand what your on about? yes the XRT/ esp XR8/GT/Pursuit would suit twin pipe system as seen on the monaro but i dont think that twins on a car is a bad thing, and there are alot of cars on the market that deserve alot more respect than what they currently receive.

Exactly, try telling me a Spec B Liberty or GT doesn't have balls. Might be under 200kw but they are friggin fast.

I'm not trying to bag any of them out at all. Just stating what I thought. My GF's parents have a Mazda 6 and it's a bloody nice bit of gear, I just wondered why a dual exhaust would be necessary on a 2.3L 4cyl, but obviously they are, and if you are spending $35k on a mid size car.....why the hell not have a dual exhaust! :P

Probably a similar reason to the suby, they can put two smaller mufflers in rather than one large one with wasted space.

As l can see reading this post you have no idea on how exhuasts work me myself have the left hand zorst pictured in the scribble and all l can say is it works, it might not work on all applications ie:4 and 6 cylinders but on the 8's they run like a dream giving more power than standard pipes and keeping the factory spec diamater and about the the **** factor l am quite offended that you called me that....

Maybe when you buy or drive a v8 you will understand this....

Ahh, I thought there must be a reason for it asides from looks, thanks for that. So the advantages of such a setup would be what? Quieter I'm guessing, would there be other advantages? And would there be a difference performance wise between that and just having a single exhaust tip?

dumpy at the back for me!... regardless if done tastefully, for purely asthetic purposes the look good, as does everything! Performance is a different story and open to a completely different argument..

What the heck is going on! Off the top of my head these are some new cars with dual exhausts:

- Mazda 6
- Honda Accord Euro
- Mazda MX5 (new)
- Renault Clio Sport (at least its kind of got balls)
- Golf R32 (passable)
- Honda Odyssey
- Audi TT (passable)
- Holden Vectra
- Hyundai TIBURON (actually doesn't look thaaat bad, but needs more balls and RWD)
- Monaro

There are probably heaps others that I cant remember right now but does anyone else see that's something's a little NQR! There is one car there that actually deserves them. It's sacrilege I tells ya!

What does everyone else think? Its an outrage!

ROFL at least mazda thought to do it from factory, wtf was ford thinking, sif bring out a BA mark 2 be it XR8 ot GT/P with single sided pipes!

I say good on em, if our beloved Ford are dumb enough not to put em on!
