Default Stalling problems

I have just fitted another alternator onto my AU III, but the car is stalling when i turn the wheel or revving from idle. Any thoughts as to what may be the cause?

power steering fluid is low, or the pressure switch has had it....do you mean if you rev it it stalls? or it revs on it's own?

If i rev it, it stalls.

Im not sure what the pressure switch is, is that contained in the power steering fulid unit ?

nope, the switch is a round white thing located on the rack, where the high pressure hose from the pump connects to the rack...
If it stalls after you rev it i don't know what could be happening, but usually a faulty pressure switch will cause it to stall/run rough when the wheel is turned..

also if you rev it and hold revs does it stall, or is it only when you release the pedal?

Only when i release it does it stall. When i hold the rev its fine.

ok i guess you disconnected the battery when you did the alternator? have you tried doing the ecu relearn procedure yet?

I agree with bodes-sh, when you disconnect the battery the ecu loses all of its operating information and takes a couple of days of different driving conditions to re-learn its settings. This can also be a good time to check the cleanliness of the idle speed control valve. It is an easy job. Just follow GKs thread in this forum somewhere. Be patient and the ecu will come good.

Thanks for the links to the threads and the help guys. Im about to go and give the ECU relearn a go & if that fails, the isc valve a clean.

Just a bit of extra info, it feels as though there as no power steering fluid in the pump & makes the noise as if there wasnt, but it is full. Is this to be expected & would the ECU relearn fix this ???

sounds a bit strange about that, i'd be checking out the pressure switch, that's more than likely the problem with the steering, i don't think they cost much for a new one, and they aren't too hard to put on, it's worth a try and if it fixes it great

The ECU relearn did nothing to help, the steering problem is a little weird & has me thinking that it may be the pressure switch from what im hearing, although ive no idea where it is located. Can you give me a pointer ?

I'd be looking at the power steering pump itself. Sounds like it could be the bearing seizing up and putting a load on you motor while idling and also making that weird noise you mentioned.

You can check this by removing the drive belt and spinning the pulley and see how freely it moves and whether you can feel anything through the pulley or hear if it makes a noise (but on a lower scale) as you described.

may also be an air lock take it from lock to lock and hold it at each extreme 2 to 3 sec repeat 8 to 10 times

Dont think it is an air lock, i tried the fix for that a few times with no joy, couldnt get the damn power steering switch out, the pump itself sounds as though it is fine although there is a small leak from the connector at the back.

I think ill just bite the bullet with this one & take it to a mechanic, its frustrating me a little too much.

If the power steering pump has a small leak at the rear of it you can be certain that this is the reason your alternator failed in the first place. Nearly everyone who is anyone on this site has had this drama with the AU series and I highly recommend you repair this ASAP or you will be up for the cost of another alternator. Repco have a good replacement hose for these and are fairly easy to fit. But do it NOW!!!!

Good news, Gave the ISC & throttle body a clean & shes good as new.

I had a look at the power steering pump and the O-ring on the hose leading into the pump is definitely degraded. I went down to the local auto store today & they said they would have a replacement O-ring in tomorrow arvo. Is just a new O-ring good enough, or would you still suggest getting a new hose ?? how much do they retail for at repco ??

Could you please tell us how much??? as my Au has the same problem a very small seap that needs to be attended too, or could get expensive in the long run?

Answer to your question is: - YES – get it fixed ASAP or you will be looking at a new alternator soon. There are many threads on this issue.

If you are handy with tools and an angle grinder / hacksaw, you can buy the hose attachment alone from Ford for a few bucks and fix it yourself.

Or replacement hoses are available from Repco or ebay (app $60).

Thanks for that George, it's very much appreciated, will definitely get replacement hose from Repco & see if I'm competent/gutsy enough in the job or will have get assistance, blimey i just noticed it today alternator looks fine but geez I don't want to have to replace it, so i better get to it! after it gets a new lukey exhaust on tuesday...

Went to Bursons earlier this week Wednesday & bought the hose kit; replaced it that night myself luckly I had a spare half drum of fluid, I didn't find it hard to do as it had instructions & jacked her up, cars all good!! now I'm very happy

hey guys just reading bout the pressure switch and i unpluged mine as i put cruise control in, the new loom was off a v8 and didnt have a connector for it. havent seem to have any dramas yet. is there any problem with leaving this off?
