My 10 year old VE SS wagon 6.0L will do under 10L/100km on a highway trip, and sits on 11.8L/100km with mixed driving. That’s a 2 tonne wagon with 2 valve heads and pushrods, and I don’t drive it like a grandma either.

I don’t see why a modern engine couldn’t beat this, even if a little heavier and less aerodynamic.
