How much is a 20 cent sized door ding worth?
Put one in a Rolls Royce and it would probably cost $5000 but it shouldn't matter if you have a Rolls or a Holden.
To me with an unmarked car I wouldn't be happy with $500 but probably $1000 would make me whole again. Even at $1000 I'd still prefer not having to go through the exercise.
It has to be worth taking the culprit to court as the alternative is you pay for it or live with it, not an option.
