You wouldn't think too much about this until you're on the other end of the order process, but there could be a very good reason.
How many times to people order stuff without part numbers, or incorrect descriptions? And it's normally some young person in their first customer service role, processing orders, who has little product knowledge or experience to know all the quirks.
Someone at that company was smart when it came to working out ways to reduce processing errors. If you put down a 6m length, or multiples of 6, they know you want unistrut. Likewise if you asked for a 4m "strip" - then they know you want a cable tray.
